Why can’t my guest see the screen I’m sharing?

What to check when your guest cannot see the screen you are sharing in Nearo.

If screen sharing looks active on your end but your guest says they see nothing, work through these checks in order.

Confirm that screen sharing is actually running

These checks take only a few seconds and rule out the most common cause.

  • Check that the Share Screen button has changed to Stop Sharing, a monitor with a line through it. It is in the controls bar, the dark gray strip along the bottom of the call window, right after the camera button. In the small floating window, it is in the row of buttons under the video tiles, and it also turns blue.

  • Look for amber markers in all four corners of the screen you are sharing.

  • Check for the blue Sharing label in the floating window, or the "You are sharing your screen" banner across the top of the full window.

  • If you see "Screen sharing stopped unexpectedly", click Share Screen and choose your screen again.

  • If you see "The window you were sharing was closed, so sharing stopped", click Share Screen and choose a screen or window again.

  • If your guest sees "Loading [your name]'s screen…", the picture is still arriving. If they see "Reconnecting…" with "[Your name]'s screen will come back on its own.", their connection dropped for a moment and the screen returns by itself.

  • If you are sharing one window and your guest sees a message such as "[Your name]'s shared window is minimized", open that window again. The picture comes back on its own.

  • If none of these appear, click the Share Screen button, then click the screen you want to share. If only one screen appears, you still need to click on that screen to start screen sharing.

ℹ️ Every guest can see a shared screen, whether they joined from the web or from the Nearo desktop app. How they joined only affects whether they can share their own screen. See Joining a Nearo Room as a guest.

Check that you are sharing the right screen or window

If you have more than one display connected, your guest may be watching the display you are not using.

  • Ask your guest to describe what they see, so you know whether they are seeing the wrong screen or nothing at all.

  • If you chose a single window, your guest sees only that window. To show more, share a whole screen instead.

  • Click Share Screen to stop sharing.

  • Click Share Screen again, then click the other screen or window.

  • Confirm with your guest that the correct screen is now visible.

Allow screen recording on your Mac

On a Mac, Nearo cannot capture your screen until macOS gives it permission, even though sharing may look like it started. If the screen-choosing window, which opens when you click Share Screen, reads "No Content Available", this is the likely cause.

  • Open System Settings, then select Privacy & Security.

  • Click Screen & System Audio Recording, which some Macs show as Screen Recording.

  • Turn on the permission for Nearo, or turn it off and on again if it is already on.

  • Quit Nearo completely, reopen it, and try sharing again.

💡 For older macOS versions, locked settings, or a missing Nearo entry, see How do I enable screen recording permissions on my Mac?

Restart sharing and rejoin the Room

If the permission is in place and the correct screen is selected, restarting the connection usually clears it.

  • Click Share Screen to stop sharing, then start sharing again.

  • Ask your guest to leave the Room and rejoin using the same Room link.

  • Start screen sharing again once your guest is back in the Room.

If your guest still cannot see your screen

A full restart clears problems that a new session on its own will not.

  • Quit Nearo completely on both computers.

  • Restart your computer, and ask your guest to restart theirs.

  • Reopen Nearo, rejoin the Room, and share your screen again.
