Using pages in a Nearo notebook

Move between pages, add or import pages, set backgrounds and margins, and duplicate, move, or delete a page.

A notebook is a stack of portrait, letter-sized pages that you scroll through vertically, one page after another.

The white area is the page. The space around it is not part of the page and will not print. Pages are portrait only. You can change the margins for the whole notebook, as described below.

Moving between pages

  • To open a notebook, click the Notebooks icon in the Controls bar, the dark gray strip along the bottom of the call window, right after Share Screen.

The page controls are in the middle of the top band, the strip across the top of the open notebook.

  • Click the left and right arrows on either side of the page indicator to move to the previous or next page. The view fits the page you move to. The left arrow is dimmed on the first page and the right arrow on the last.

  • Check the page indicator, such as "Page 2 of 5," to see where you are. Click the words "Page" or "of 5" to fit the whole page in view, or click the number, type a page number, and press Enter to jump to that page.

  • Scroll up or down to move through the pages, or drag the thin scrollbar along the right edge of the notebook. The scrollbar appears only when the notebook has two or more pages.

In a very narrow window, the Add page icon and ··· also move into the More (⋮) menu at the right end of the top band, as Add page and Page options….

ℹ️ Your student has no page controls. Your student is always on whatever page you are on, and their view moves when yours does.

Adding a page

  • Click the Add page icon, a page with a plus sign, right after the next-page arrow in the middle of the top band, to add a blank page directly after the current one. The notebook moves to the new page.

  • To add a page at the end, scroll to the bottom of the notebook and click the dashed Add page box below the last page. The notebook moves to the new page.

Importing a PDF

Use Import PDF to bring pages from a PDF, such as a worksheet, into your notebook.

  • Click Import PDF at the right of the top band, just before Notebooks. In a narrow window, it is in the More (⋮) menu at the right end of the band.

  • Choose All pages, or choose Pages and type the pages you want, such as "4-7" or "1,3,5". A grid of thumbnails shows the pages in the PDF.

  • Click the button that shows how many pages you are adding, such as Add 3 pages.

The imported pages go in after the page you are on. The dialog notes how many pages you can add at once. If the notebook still has its automatic name, Nearo adds the PDF's file name to it.

Your student cannot change imported pages unless you turn on Adjust PDF, and Clear page leaves them in place. Only you can import PDFs. To move, resize, or crop an imported page, see Adjusting an imported PDF in a Nearo notebook.

Removing an imported PDF

Remove PDF… is available whenever the notebook has an imported PDF.

  • Click ··· to open the page options, then click Remove PDF….

  • In the Remove PDF box, choose This page, choose Pages and type the page numbers as the page counter shows them, such as 1-3, 9, or choose All imported PDFs.

  • Click Remove.

Anything drawn on those pages stays, and you can undo the removal.

Duplicating a page

  • Click ···, the three dots next to the Add page icon in the top band, to open the page options.

  • Click Duplicate page.

The current page and everything on it is copied, and the copy is placed directly after it.

Moving a page

  • Click ··· in the top band, next to the Add page icon, to open the page options.

  • Click Move page up or Move page down.

Move page up is not available on the first page, and Move page down is not available on the last.

Changing a page background

  • Click ··· in the top band, next to the Add page icon, to open the page options.

  • Click Page background.

  • Choose a Style: Blank, Lined, Handwriting guides, Grid, or Dot grid.

  • Choose a Line spacing: Title, Heading, Subheading, Body, or Small. The spacing matches that text style's line height. This is not available for Blank.

  • Choose a Paper tint: White, Cream, Soft yellow, Soft blue, or Soft green.

  • Use Apply to all pages to choose between every page and this page only, then click Done.

The background sits under everything on the page. Your student sees it, but only you can change it.

Changing the margins

  • Click ···, the three dots next to the Add page icon in the middle of the top band, to open the page options.

  • Click the plus or minus on Side margins to move the left and right margins together, or on Top and bottom margins to move the top and bottom margins together. Both are right under Page background.

Margins apply to every page in the notebook and are saved with it. The page guide, any lines or grid, and the width of new text follow right away, and your student sees the same. Nothing already on the page moves or re-wraps. Your student cannot change margins.

Deleting a page

  • Click ··· in the top band, next to the Add page icon, to open the page options.

  • Click Delete page.

  • Confirm by clicking Delete page in the dialog.

The page is removed and the remaining pages are renumbered. Deleting a page can be undone.

A notebook always keeps at least one page, so the last remaining page cannot be deleted.

💡 To reuse pages with other students, choose Save as template… from the same page options. See Using templates in Nearo notebooks.
