What should I do if the Nearo setup check says something needs attention?

Fix the camera, microphone, speaker, browser, or connection problem that the Nearo setup check finds.

The Nearo setup check runs on its own before a session and shows one line about what, if anything, needs fixing.

Read the setup check line

  • On the join page in your browser, the line is under the camera and microphone preview, which sits below the name box and the join button.

  • In the Nearo desktop app, press Join a Room, type the room code, and press Next. The line is under the camera preview, below Join Room and Cancel. If you joined from the Join a room section after signing in, there is no setup check line.

  • As a host, the line is in the right column of your Room window, under your Room link. In the small Floating View window, only a problem shows, as one line across the top.

  • "Your setup looks good." means nothing needs attention. Otherwise the line shows the most important problem first, in the order Camera, Microphone, Connection to Nearo, Browser or device, Backup connection, then Speakers.

  • Click See more to see every check and the sentence to fix under each problem. Click Check again after you fix something.

  • A student can click Join anyway beside a problem. The check never stops anyone from joining.

If the Camera check shows a problem

  • If the line says "We can't see you. Tap Allow when your browser asks to use the camera.", allow camera access when your browser asks, then click Check again.

  • In the Nearo desktop app, if the line says "We can't see you. Let Nearo use your camera in your computer's settings, then press Check again.", allow Nearo to use your camera in your computer's settings and press Check again. See Which ports and permissions does Nearo require?

  • If the line says "We can't find a camera. Check it's plugged in and not being used by another app.", plug in your camera, close any other app that is using it, and press Check again.

If the Microphone check shows a problem

  • If the line says "We can't hear you. Tap Allow when your browser asks to use the microphone.", allow microphone access when your browser asks, then click Check again.

  • In the Nearo desktop app, if the line says "We can't hear you. Let Nearo use your microphone in your computer's settings, then press Check again.", allow Nearo to use your microphone in your computer's settings and press Check again.

  • If the line says "We can't find a microphone. Check it's plugged in and not being used by another app.", plug it in, close any other app that is using it, and press Check again.

  • If the line says "Your microphone isn't picking up any sound. Check it isn't muted, or choose a different one.", make sure your microphone is not muted. In your browser, you can choose a different one from the Mic picker below the camera preview. In the guest Nearo desktop app, use the Mic: button next to the preview. As a host, click the small arrow next to Mic in the Controls bar.

If the Connection to Nearo check shows a problem

If the Browser or device check shows a problem

  • In a browser, if the line says "This browser is out of date. Update it, or open the link in Chrome, Safari or Edge.", update your browser or open the Room link in Chrome, Safari or Edge. See Using a supported browser for Nearo.

  • In the Nearo desktop app, if the line says "This copy of Nearo is out of date. Close Nearo and open it again to update.", close Nearo completely and open it again.

If the Backup connection check shows a problem

  • If the line says "This network may block video calls. If your call doesn't connect, try a different Wi-Fi.", switch to a different Wi-Fi network or a phone hotspot if you can.

  • On the join page, Backup connection often reads "Not tested" until you press the join button. This is normal.

If the Speakers check shows a problem

  • Click Play test sound to play a short chime, then click I heard it or I didn't hear it. Until you answer, Speakers reads "Not tested yet", which is not a problem. The chime plays through the speaker you picked in Nearo. In Safari, it plays through your computer's default speaker.

  • If you did not hear it, the line says "Turn the volume up, or check your headphones are plugged in. Then play the sound again." Do that, then click Play test sound again.

Send or copy your results

  • Click See more, then click Copy results to copy a plain-text summary. If your browser or computer blocks copying, the text appears in a box with "Select the text below and copy it."

  • A student can click Send to my tutor. Type your name first if asked: "Add your name so your tutor knows who this is from." Afterwards you see "Sent to [tutor's name]."

  • Students and hosts can click Send to Nearo Support. The line then reads "Sent to Nearo Support." The Room window has Send to Nearo Support and Copy results only, with no Send to my tutor.

  • If you see "Your results have already been sent.", they are already with your tutor or Nearo Support.
