Privacy at Nexar
Updated over a week ago

The article explains how Nexar handles data, complies with privacy regulations, and ensures that your data is protected.

At Nexar, we have the utmost respect for your privacy.

Any Nexar dash cam video footage you take or store on our servers is yours – you own your data. We will never share any data belonging to individual users with a third party, without that person having authorized or requested it first. Nexar will never track individuals or allow third parties to use the Nexar system and violate the privacy of our individual users or the privacy of 3rd parties whose activity was captured by Nexar.

Nexar vows to protect users and any third-party privacy within its network. To ensure this policy, we have based our network on built-in anonymization systems designed to prevent and deter any breach of privacy. We do not keep, sell, nor utilize for any commercial purpose, any personally identifiable information from our users. That includes location, motion, imagery, customer or any other information.

While you retain ownership of all of your user content, by providing us with this content, you grant Nexar (in accordance with our Privacy Policy) the right to process your content so that we can provide the service to you. This license ends when you delete your content or your account, or if you decide to opt out of data sharing under our newly updated Privacy Policy. You also grant us a perpetual right to use parts of your uploaded content, once they are de-linked, de-identified, anonymized, and then aggregated with other user’s data, so that it cannot be traced back to you, for the purpose of creating collective road intelligence.

For instance, we use elements of your footage to improve our technology and produce data products, such as showing public data (such as road signs, buildings, the state of the road, traffic patterns, and behavior) but we do not keep, sell, or utilize for any commercial purpose any personal data from our users.

Our street-level anonymization, for example, protects the identity of our users by removing the dashboard and windshield elements, and of citizens at large in the public space by blurring faces and license plates. We do this by detecting and blurring out every visible person’s face, in addition to every readable license plate in our frames. We might deliver images of street signs to mapping companies, potholes, and construction zones to cities, or help municipalities better manage the public space. We believe that it’s possible to preserve and respect your privacy, while still allowing us to utilize your information to provide our valuable products and services to communities around the world. This is our privacy commitment to you.

For more about our commitment to privacy, see our Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.

FAQs

Can I Choose Not to Share My Data with Nexar?

Yes, you can opt out of contributing anonymized user content anytime via the app’s settings menu. We've updated our Privacy Policy to give you the choice between contributing anonymized data or not sharing your data at all. Your privacy is a top priority for us, and we ensure that shared data is always anonymized to protect your identity. Sharing your data contributes to collective efforts to improve road safety and mobility, but the choice to participate is entirely yours.

Why is Nexar requesting permission to use other services and features on my phone?

Nexar requires your permission in order to access the basic services and features available on your smartphone, to provide you with the best service possible. These basic services (e.g., the built-in camera and location services) provide accurate and essential information. This information includes the geographic location, direction, and speed your vehicle was traveling at the time of the incident - something needed for creating a Nexar Collision Report.

The camera and media features are needed to record and store this information correctly. The sensors are used to provide the most accurate information in case of incidents and collisions.

As a result, under Location Services, you should enable the "Always" setting to ensure that the Nexar Auto start feature works correctly.

Is any of my information shared?

We believe that you have the right to your privacy.

You are the owner of your data, and Nexar will never share any data belonging to an individual user with a third party, without that person having authorized or requested it first.

Nexar will never track individuals or allow third parties to use the Nexar system and violate the privacy of our individual users.

Nexar will also never allow the Nexar network to be used as a digital panopticon (i.e. system to monitor and discipline) for the monitoring of individuals, or by law enforcement or any other group or organization, in a way that would contravene the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Nexar fully complies with all legal requirements. Our network is constructed in a way that will not allow it to be used by government-sanctioned tools for the purpose of tracking and locating individuals.

Nexar vows to protect user privacy within its network. To ensure this policy, we have based our network on built-in anonymization systems designed to prevent and deter any breach of privacy.

What type of data is being captured and how will you ensure my privacy?

Nexar’s app-based platform collects several types of data, such as video and GPS information, but it does not collect information about other vehicles or individuals on the road around you. The compiled data is completely anonymized before it is used to create the smart mobility tools and data services that make our roads safer.

What does Nexar do with the data it captures?

Nexar uses parts of your uploaded content, de-linked, de- identified, anonymized and aggregated. For instance, we use elements of your footage to improve our technology and produce data products, such as showing public data (such as road signs, buildings, the state of the road and traffic patterns and behavior) but we do not keep, sell, or utilize for any commercial purpose any personal data from our users.

Our street-level anonymization, for example, protects the identity of our users by blurring faces and license plates. We do this by detecting and blurring out every visible person’s face, in addition to every readable license plate in our frames. We might deliver images of street signs to mapping companies, potholes and construction zones to cities, or help municipalities better manage the public space. When data we collect can help our users drive more safely, we will share it to our app.

Does the Nexar app provide any of this data to the U.S. federal government or law enforcement?

Nexar does not voluntarily share any information with federal or government law enforcement agencies.

Does Nexar provide any of this data to my insurance company?

Nexar will not share any of your information with an insurance company, without first receiving your explicit consent.

If you are using Nexar as part of an offer from your insurance company, or as a part of your policy requirements, you might be asked to share a Nexar Collision Report with your insurer at your discretion.

Is Nexar fully compliant with GDPR regulations?

Yes, and we are not only ensuring your right to privacy if you live in the EU, but we are applying the same policy across for everybody regardless where they live in the world. We are enabling you to export all of the data you have uploaded (while keeping you safe on the road) from our servers. It’s called the Right to Data Portability by the GDPR. We are also enabling you to completely erase your data by deleting your account. This is called the Right to Be Forgotten by the GDPR. We also have a Chief Information Security Officer, someone whose job is to regulate all of the security and privacy measures we have in place. Nexar is also ISO 27001 and ISO 270017 certified, which further guarantees the most strict standards in information security for safekeeping your private data.

How does Nexar make money?

We make money by capturing facts about the world that are not private in any way. We actually do not care about your private drives. We care about potholes on the road and orange cones and the free parking spot or how the construction of a new townhouse is progressing. Or whether or not it rained near the stadium.

How do you filter out sensitive content?

Some of our users position their Nexar camera to record what’s happening inside the vehicle, instead of facing externally. In order to avoid publishing images or videos that were taken internally, or images that are potentially sensitive (like those taken from within someone’s garage), we have trained a classifier model to differentiate between external images and those taken in an internal setting.

How do you remove identifying markers?

There are times where images taken show a large portion of the vehicle’s dashboard, sometimes identifying objects or unique markers. To fully anonymize these images, we built a model that predicts the extent of the dashboard in the image, and removes it from publicly available images.

What are Nexar’s future objectives regarding privacy?

Nexar aims to expand on our privacy model by refining our models, removing even more identifying artifacts like reflections, and running full semantic segmentation of images to differentiate outside pixels from interior ones. This provides true and full differential privacy.

What happens when I delete my Nexar account?

When you delete your Nexar account, all of your ride data is deleted from our database and cannot be recovered at a later date. You have an option to delete all your data before you delete the account.

How long does Nexar keep my data?

We keep your personal data for as long as your account is active or we consider necessary for the purposes described in our Privacy Policy. We will also keep and use such personal data for as long as is required in order to comply with our legal and contractual obligations, or to protect ourselves from any potential disputes.

Please note that - unless required by applicable law - we will not be obligated to retain your data for any particular period. We can therefore securely delete it for any reason and at any time, with or without notifying you.

Questions, concerns, or complaints: if you have any comments or questions about this Privacy Policy or if you have any concerns regarding your privacy, please contact us at privacy@getnexar.com. If you are a GDPR-protected individual, you also have the right to lodge a complaint with an EU supervisory authority.
