How to use the Handy Onboarding App

Learn how to use the Handy Onboarding App

Updated this week

To go alongside Firmware 4, we released a new app with the goal of streamlining and empowering the onboarding of new and old users.

The app is able to connect your device, test connection, use remote control and gather device information as well.

Please keep in mind that you will only be able to use the Onboarding App if your device is on Firmware 4. Otherwise, you will need to use the Handyverse App for any Firmware 3 Handy.

Please keep in mind that Firmware 4 is currently in Beta, as such issues are expected. If you face issues, please email contact@thehandy.com with as much information as you can gather regarding the issue.

How to connect

When you first open the app, the app will check if you have enabled Bluetooth Permissions on your phone. If it does not have, it will proceed to request it to be able to communicate with devices.

Once the permissions step is done, you will see a menu letting you select which device you are attempting to connect.

Once you select, instructions on how to enable your device to be found by your app should appear. Follow the instructions on screen to enable your device to be able to found by the app.

Instructions for the Handy

Instructions for the Handy 2

Instructions for the Oh!

If done correctly, the bottom of the app will change to signal that it is looking for devices and you cancel out of it, if necessary.

Depending on which device it found, a window will appear with information on the device it was able to find, this also changes the interface based on which device is connected.

Here's an example of this pop-up:

First time experience

If this is your first time using the app, there will be extra steps to help you set-up the device itself as well as some notices. Here's the usual process:

  • Terms and Conditions
The first step the app prompts you to verify is the Terms and Conditions of using the Handy. You can accept the Terms and Conditions and also accept the optional points, those being to allow devices to collect anonymous usage data and to allow collecting crash reports.

  • Connect Wi-Fi
The second step is to configure your Wi-Fi network, follow the instructions on screen for configuring this step.

  • Firmware Update
The last step is to check if your device is up-to-date. If it is, you can quickly move on from this step, otherwise it will prompt you to update.
It is also possible to completely skip this step, but not recommended.

Main Screen Details

When you're done with the setup, the main screen will come up. First, let's learn about what is on this screen so you can understand the status of your device.

The Icons on the top left you can find the Internet Status (1) and Bluetooth Status (2). They indicate the status of the connection of the device, a green icon means connected and a white icon means not connected.

There is a "Get started here:" button (3) that will open the new.handyfeeling.com website for you to connect your device and be able to sync your device to videos, remote control and use other functions.

Lastly, you will find a box which contains your connection key (4), this key is what you use to have establish connection with the features on handyfeeling and other apps online.

Please be sure to note down or save your connection key somewhere, you will need it to go online on any device.

At the very top left, you can find three horizontal bars. This button opens a side menu with further options. Let's take a look at what is available

Side Menu

On the side panel, you can see some further options.

The Add a device button let's you connect to a different device, it will take you back to the device selection step.

Settings lets you further configure the device, we will look into further options later.

Device Info gets you detailed information on your device, these details include the following

  • Unit info

  • Firmware

  • WiFi

  • Connected WiFi

  • Battery

  • Memory

At the very bottom you can find a toggle called Full info which gives you raw data about your device. This is mostly used for developers and more detailed troubleshooting.

Help Center take you directly to our Help Center to find articles about the device and more.

In the bottom of the Side Panel is the App Version and Build Version details about the App.

Settings Menu

These menus have sub menus so let's take a look at each of them below.

Connection

Under Connection you will see a options which will tell the device how to behave currently.

Keep in mind that this swaps the mode the device is currently on, so if you go from WiFi & Bluetooth or Bluetooth to Offline for example, it will disconnect your device from the app itself!

Menu Example

Wi-Fi is the recommended option, once you turn on the device it will automatically try to connect to your network and be ready to connect via connection key.

Bluetooth will boot the device on Bluetooth mode, ready for connecting via the Handy Onboarding App.

Offline will boot the device in Offline Mode, meaning it can't be found by connection key or any app, only the buttons on the device itself will control it.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth will boot the device in a special mode where mode the device is available to be found by connection key and the app, but this is not recommended, this mode adds around 200ms of latency to the device's response time. This added delay can create desync content you are using the device with and require manual adjustment, for the best experience we don't recommend this mode.

Legacy Bluetooth will boot the device in a special mode where the device will be available to be found on applications and services that only support Firmware 3, it's useful for troubleshooting and helps cover compatibility with other apps.

Wi-fi

The Wi-Fi option gives you a detailed page for your currently connected network, you can also change the network using the "Change Wi-Fi" button below the information panel

Connection Key

The connection key option will let you change the key currently used to connect to your device when it is in online mode, this is the key you share with people to control your device as well.

You can use the Key Length slider to define how many characters the key itself will have.

Once you're satisfied with the size, you can click on Generate new key to get a new key and be able to share or use it.

Control

The Control options will allow you to control your device via the Handy Onboarding App. There are three modes of operation, HAMP (Handy Alternating Motion Protocol), HRPP (Handy Repeating Pattern Protocol) and HVP (Handy Vibration Protocol).

Every mode is controlled via Bluetooth.

HAMP is the most commonly used mode, it will have up and down movements with stroke range and velocity settings.

Menu example

HRPP is a new mode, you can adjust speed and stroke range but the main feature is that the device has stored in it's memory patterns that simulate specific acts.

Menu example

HVP is used exclusively with the Oh! It lets you control Amplitude, Frequency and Position.

Menu example

Advanced

The Advanced menu contains multiple further menus with options to customize your device.

Privacy has the options for sharing details about crash reports and usage data for you to enable or disable at will

Server Environment has 2 main options, Production and Staging.

Production is the stable version of the server environment, where every user is by default. Updates are stable and generally speaking the best they can be.

Staging is the experimental version of the server environment, where you can get experimental updates and early versions of firmware. This is only recommended to advanced users.

Slider Settings allows to further fine tune the slider behavior in both the Handy 1 and the Handy 2.

Slider Endpoint serves as a master setting for the stroke range, regardless of how applications are configured, this Start and End value define where, in software, the top and bottom of the slider are. You can use the Store Values button to save your preference.

Calibrate will automatically find the very top and bottom of the actual range and use those values.

Reverse slider simply changes where the bottom and the top of the device are in software.

With the toggle off: Device behaves normally
With the toggle on: Device swaps top and bottom of the device.

There is also a Temperature monitor for the motor of the device with and offset setting for the temperature itself.

The last option lets you reset the settings for your device's slider back to factory default.

Slider Overclock

Keep in mind that enabling the Slider Overclock can and will cause problems and as such, it will void your warranty! As such, unless you are 100% sure of what you are doing, we don't recommend enabling this option.

This menu contains setting to very meticulously fine tune the device's behavior. Because of the amount of options in this menu is immense, this will be better explained in a separate article, which you can find here.

Boot Mode

This menu changes what mode your device starts on, this is unlike the connection option we mentioned before. This only changes the initial powering on mode after a power off.

Reboot Device

This forces the device to reboot, disconnecting it from the app.

Factory Reset Device

This removes all stored information like Network and Slider settings, then reboots the device. This will also reset the app.
