Once athletes start running again, it’s often valuable to optimize their load profile, especially for those with a high load profile combined with a low tolerance profile see how to ensure gradual followup
We recommend running an intervention screening only after the athlete has completed several pain-free running sessions. The goal is to explore how small changes in running technique or speed affect their mechanical load.
1. Why optimize load?
Every athlete responds differently to running interventions such as: adjusting running speed, increasing cadence and modifying vertical oscillation (how much a runner’s upper body moves up and down with each step).
ℹ️ For example, scientific research shows:
Increasing cadence reduces load in ~50% of runners.
But in the other ~50%, it has no effect—or even increases load, which can be counterintuitive.
👉 This is why it’s essential to test interventions, rather than assuming they’ll work.
2. How to perform an intervention screening in OnTracx Lab
Run an Intervention Test in OnTracx PRO
Open the OnTracx PRO platform and select OnTracx Lab.
Click Start a Test.
Choose Intervention Test as the session type.
Select the leg you want to measure, or choose Asymmetry to test both legs (two sensors are required).
Select the athlete from the list. If the athlete has not been onboarded, complete the onboarding process before continuing.
Connecting the Sensor(s)
Tap Connect Sensor to open the connection screen.
Enable Bluetooth if this is your first time connecting.
Wake up the sensor by briefly touching both metal pins.
Select the sensor by matching the unique ID shown on screen with the ID on the back of the sensor.
Test Protocol
The intervention tool lets you test any condition and compare them side by side.
Name and describe your active condition.
Set the target speed using the slider.
Choose or enter the measurement duration.
Press Play to begin measuring.
Repeat these steps for additional interventions.
Select Finish Test to view results. The Intervention Effects display how each condition affects load relative to a chosen baseline. Any measurement can be selected as the baseline and you can adjust which measurements are included in the comparison.
⚠️ We recommend changing only one variable per measurement to ensure clear comparisons.
⚠️ Always make changes gradually and ensure the athlete feels comfortable at all times.
✅ With intervention screening, you can fine-tune running technique and training intensity, making return-to-run safer, more efficient, and more personalized.
