Is it safe to reset a tripped breaker?

Updated this week

Generally yes, but context matters:

Safe to reset once:

  • Occasional trip (first time in months)

  • Clear cause (overloaded circuit, power surge)

  • Breaker isn't hot to touch

  • No burning smell or visible damage

Do NOT reset if:

  • Breaker trips immediately when reset

  • Breaker trips repeatedly (multiple times per day)

  • Breaker or panel is hot

  • You smell burning or see scorch marks

  • You don't know why it tripped

Repeated tripping indicates a serious problem—circuit overload, short circuit, or failing breaker. Schedule service rather than repeatedly resetting.
