How to select the right flange size?
CHECK OUR FLANGE SIZE GUIDE
Finding the right flange size is part art, part science. You may have to experiment with different flange sizes to determine what works best for your body. Using the right flange size is super important. If your flange is too small or too large, it may cause you discomfort, pain, or underproduction.
Our flange size guide is available on our website.
You can also download it here.
HOW TO MEASURE YOUR NIPPLE?
Stimulate your nipple until it pops out and measure the diameter of your nipple in millimeters, from base to base. You can measure it with any kind of ruler.
For flat nipples, it's crucial to gently stimulate the nipple to make it as erect as possible before measuring. This can be done by lightly massaging or using a warm cloth.
Your nipple size | Your flange size |
<12 mm | Size 15 |
12-14 mm | Size 18 |
15-17 mm | Size 21 |
18-20 mm | Size 24 |
21-25 mm | Size 27 |
If you require a flange smaller than 15 mm, there are compatible inserts available on Amazon that fit some of our flange sizes. We recommend contacting us at support@perifit.co for guidance on compatible options.
If you are between sizes, select the size that has the measurement closest to your nipple without touching it. The flange is made of soft and flexible silicone, which guarantees comfort and a good fitting.
Example : If your nipple measure a bit more than 17 mm, take the size 21.
Our flanges are also sold individually on our website right here.
For most women, the correct flange size is the one that fits snugly around the nipple, without it touching the sides (there should be 1 or 2mm of distance from the nipple tunnel).
How to verify that I am using the right flange size?
WHAT ARE THE SIGNS WHEN THE SIZE IS NOT RIGHT?
If the areola is drawn into the tunnel, and you feel discomfort or get the sensation of being burned around your nipple→ this is a sign that the flange is too big.
If the nipple becomes swollen or blue after each pumping session → this is a sign that the flange is too big.
If you feel the nipple body rubbing against the edges of the nipple tunnel or the nipple turns white → this is a sign that the flange is too small.
WHAT ELSE CAN I DO?
Measure your nipple again, as size can change overtime.
Perform "the mirror test"
If you still have doubts, here is another test. Place the flange on your nipple and look in a mirror. If you can see the areola in the nipple shield tunnel, the nipple shield is too big for you.
You can also put the camera of your phone in front of the nipple shield and take a photo to get a better look at the inside.
If you still have doubts and would like to share photos with our customer service girls, we're always here to help!
IF THE SIZE I CORRECT, CHECK THE FOLLOWING STEPS:
Lubricate your nipple
Lubrication often helps with discomfort! You can lubricate your nipple or the flange tunnel using a very small amount of vegetable oil such as coconut or olive oil, or even a drop of your milk. Many women have a very good experience with this simple technique.
Check the alignment
Alignment is just as important as size. Your nipple should be perfectly centered in the flange tunnel, without touching the sides. Check our tips on how to perfectly align your nipple in the flange.
