How to avoid making spam emails

Good email design practices to make sure your campaigns don’t go to spam

Updated this week

When you're sending email campaigns for marketing, the last thing you want is for them to end up in your recipient’s spam folder. Here are practical and proven tips to improve email deliverability and stay out of the spam box.

Make sure you use a Verified Domain

Before you start marketing, make sure you have verified your sender email domain under settings!

Avoid Spammy Language

Spam filters scan for trigger words and patterns so be careful how you phrase your email. Keep it professional, relevant, and human-sounding.

What to avoid:

  • Excessive use of ALL CAPS, bold text, or multiple !!!

  • Common spam phrases like “100% FREE,” “Act now,” “Click here,” or “No credit check”

  • Overuse of emojis or flashy formatting

Provide a Clear and Visible Unsubscribe Link

Failing to include this can flag your emails and lead to complaints from your customer database.

Monitor Your Metrics & Try Different Strategies!

High bounce rates, spam complaints, and low engagement are red flags. If you’re seeing these in your campaign’s statistics, you may need to adjust your e-mail marketing design and wording. Try some different approaches and see how they fare!

Balance Images and Text

Emails with too many images and little or no text can look suspicious. Maintain a healthy ratio (about 60% text to 40% images)

Test Before Sending

Even well-intentioned emails can get flagged. Create a list with just your email address and send yourself a proper test campaign. This is not with the ‘test’ email feature, but by creating a dedicated test contact list and fully sending out the campaign to your test contacts.
