Activation fees are used to bill users when they begin a charging session. To ensure fair billing and reduce unnecessary refund requests, the system includes several grace conditions and thresholds that determine when an activation fee will or will not be applied.
This article explains the current activation fee exceptions as well as upcoming activation fee grace variables that will soon become part of all payment plan configurations.
Why Activation Fee Grace Rules Exist
The grace rules are designed to ensure users are charged only for valid charging sessions. This helps prevent billing issues caused by:
Accidental session activation
Charging errors where no power is delivered
Unintentional disconnections or early termination
Users quickly restarting a session after an interruption
By applying clear thresholds, the system reduces the likelihood of invalid charges and minimizes refund requests.
Current Activation Fee Waiver Scenarios
An activation fee is automatically waived under any of the following conditions:
Session Duration Is Less Than 5 Minutes - Short sessions are often accidental or unsuccessful.
Energy Consumption Is 0 kWh - If the charger does not deliver any electricity, the session is not considered valid.
Session Is Reactivated Within 10 Minutes on the Same Device - A 10-minute grace period allows users to restart a session without being charged twice.
These built-in exceptions ensure only genuine, successful charging sessions incur an activation fee.
Upcoming Activation Fee Grace Variables
To provide more precise and configurable billing logic, the system will soon introduce three activation fee grace variables. These will eventually appear in the UI and be included as part of each payment plan’s configuration.
Grace Variables
Variable Name | Description | Default Value |
minDurationThreshold | Minimum session duration required for an activation fee to apply | 5 minutes |
minWhThreshold | Minimum energy consumption required | 0.000 kWh |
minWaitThreshold | Minimum time since the last activated session on the same device | 10 minutes |
How These Variables Work
For an activation fee to apply, all three conditions must be met:
The session duration is greater than the minimum duration threshold
The session consumption is greater than the minimum energy threshold
The time since the last activation on the same device is greater than the minimum wait threshold
If any of these conditions are not met, the activation fee is automatically waived.
Pay-Per-Activation Plan Note
If you are on a Pay Per Activation billing plan, only sessions that meet all activation requirements (after applying the grace thresholds) are counted as valid activations within your plan.
Summary
Activation fee grace rules ensure that users are billed fairly and only for legitimate charging sessions. The upcoming grace variables—duration, consumption, and wait time—provide more transparent, configurable, and consistent activation logic, while significantly reducing the need for activation fee refunds.
