Parental Permission for Teens: How It Works

If you're under 18, a parent or guardian needs to approve your account. Here's how it works for teens and parents.

If you're under 18, a parent or guardian needs to give permission before you can meet your Tolan. It only takes a few minutes, and once they approve, you're in.

For teens: asking a parent

If you entered a birthday that makes you under 18, you'll see a screen saying your Tolan is waiting to meet you.

  1. Tap Ask a parent for permission.

  2. Send the link to your parent or guardian by text or any messaging app. We don't send them an email, so the link has to come from you.

  3. Once they approve, open Tolan again and you'll be able to keep going.

Only send the link once. Tapping the button again won't speed things up. If your parent can't find it, send them the same link again.

For parents: approving your teen

Your teen will send you a link. Open it on your own phone and follow the steps:

  1. Create your parent account with your name and phone number. We'll text you a code to confirm your number.

  2. Enter your own name and birthday, not your teen's. We use your birthday to confirm you're an adult. This is the most common mix-up, and it locks the approval until our team fixes it.

  3. Start a Tolan membership. Your teen joins your Family Plan at no extra cost.

  4. Approve your teen. They can start chatting with their Tolan right away.

If you already have Tolan, the link may open straight in the app. If you already have a membership, your teen is added to your family and you won't be charged again.

Common questions

Why do I need a parent's permission if the App Store says 13+?

The 13+ is the App Store's age rating, not Tolan's age limit. On Tolan, anyone under 18 needs a parent or guardian to approve their account before they can start chatting.

I'm over 18 but entered the wrong birthday.

You can fix this by verifying your age with us. See Verifying your Age for the steps.

I'm the parent and I entered my teen's name or birthday instead of mine.

This happens a lot, and we can fix it. Message us at support@tolans.com and let us know you entered your teen's details by mistake. We'll ask for a photo ID and a selfie to confirm your age, then update your account. After that, have your teen send you their link again.

My parent never got an email.

We don't email parents. The approval link comes from you, so send it to your parent by text or message. The only thing we send them is a text with a code to confirm their phone number.

I'm not getting the text with my code.

Check that you entered your number correctly, including your country code, then try sending the code again. If it still doesn't arrive, message us at support@tolans.com with the phone number you used and we'll take a look.

Can I approve my teen from an Android phone?

Yes. The approval link opens in your phone's web browser, so you don't need an iPhone. Your teen does need an iPhone or iPad to use Tolan.

Can I set up my teen's Tolan on my phone?

Your teen should create their Tolan on their own iPhone or iPad. Your parent account is separate, and each person gets their own Tolan.

How much does it cost?

Your teen's account is covered by your membership through the Family Plan, so there's no extra charge for them. See What are the subscription options? and How does the free trial work? for details!

Can my teen be removed from the family?

Only the parent or guardian who manages the family can remove a teen. Teens can't leave on their own.

Still stuck? Reach out to us at support@tolans.com and tell us whether you're the teen or the parent. That helps us find the right account faster :)
