Power Spelling allows you to create your own customized spelling word lists. Use these lists when assigning spelling games or tests to your students. You can copy, edit, and share these lists with colleagues.
Creating a Word List
Select My Word Lists from the left menu.
Click on the green Add Word List button.
Select the New Word List Type - Spelling or Vocabulary.
Click Continue.
Select how you would like to add words to your list - Build My Own or Quick List (in this example, we are using the Build My Own option but will show quick list as well below).
Name the list.
Click Continue.
Enter the Details for the list: Grade and Description (optional).
Set the Status of the list. If the list is Active, the list can be assigned, copied and shared.
Add words to the list by clicking on Batch Entry or Add Words. Batch Entry allows you to upload word lists or quickly type a list (recommended). Add Words allows you to enter words one at a time.
Batch Entry Option
Click on the Batch Entry button.
There are two options in Batch Entry - Upload a List or Type a List.
Option 1: Upload a Word List. First, download the template. Enter words on the template and save list. Upload saved Word List File.
Option 2: Type words in the list. The list will expand as needed.
Click the Add Words to List button when done.
Add Words Option
Click on the Add Words button.
Type the word in the search box. Click on Search.
Available words are then displayed in a new panel to the right. Click Add To List to the right of the desired word.
If the word is not in our platform yet, click on the Add New Word button. This option allows you to add any word to the list. Make sure to add a sentence to new words.
Add/Edit Sentences
Students will hear each spelling word, along with a sentence using the spelling word.
To edit an existing sentence, click on the Add New Sentence button.
Enter a sentence if the sentence box is highlighted yellow.
Some words have multiple sentences. Click Available Sentences to see sentence options. Select the sentence you would like your students to hear.
After Adding Words - Assigning Games and Tests
You can now assign spelling games and spelling tests using list you created.
The buttons located at the top of the list allow you to:
Assign Games using this list.
Assign Tests using this list.
Print the list. You will have the option to print just the words or the words and sentences.
Copy the list. Once you have made a copy, you can edit the title and add or delete words. This is very helpful if you are making multiple lists for differentiated instruction.
Preview the list. This will display the way students will see the list.
Delete the list. This will permanently remove the word list. Deleted lists cannot be restored.
Sharing with Colleagues and Students
At the very bottom of the list you will have sharing options.
Click on the Share With Public button to share this list in the Public Word List.
Click Share With Selected Colleagues to share this list with fellow teachers.
The can edit option will allow your colleague to make changes to your list!
The read only option allows your colleague to use this list without changing your original list.
Lists are automatically Visible to Students. Students can use lists in the student “Free Play” area. If you do not want students to have access to a list, click the No Groups button to the right of Visible to Students. You can also give access to Selected Groups if you wish for specific groups to have access.
