Understanding How Scores Are Recorded

Learn which student activities save results and reports—and which are just for extra practice.

A question we sometimes get from teachers and parents is: “Why don’t I see results for everything my students have done in their accounts?”

The answer comes down to assignments vs. practice.

What Records Scores

For a student’s work to be scored and reported to teachers or parents, the activity must be completed from the Assignments tab in the student’s left-hand menu.

  • Assignments are set up by teachers (or parents, if they’re using a parent membership).

  • Once a student finishes an assigned activity, the score is recorded and can be viewed in results and reports.

What Does NOT Record Scores

Other parts of the student menu, like Free Play and Word Lists, are designed for extra practice only.

  • These sections let students explore their word lists and practice with games on their own.

  • They are helpful for studying or practicing words but do not save scores.

Why the Difference?

Think of it this way:

  • Assignments = Homework or Classwork (graded and tracked).

  • Free Play/Word Lists = Study Time (helpful, but not graded).

This setup helps keep official scores clear and tied to the work that has been intentionally assigned, while still giving students opportunities to practice and study on their own.

If you want to see your students’ scores, make sure activities are assigned and that students complete them under the Assignments tab. Free Play and Word Lists are great for practice, but they won’t show up in results and reports.
