In a Story Writing activity, students write a short story using all of the assigned spelling or vocabulary words.
NOTE: Story Writing activities are available to Plus Plan users.
There are two ways to assign this activity.
Option 1:
Click a word list section in the left menu.
Find the word list you want to use, then click Assign Activity to the right of the word list title.
Select Write a story using the spelling words.
Choose the assignment status: Active, Inactive, or Scheduled.
Click Next.
Choose the students or classes you want to assign the activity to.
Click Create Assignment.
Option 2:
Click a word list section in the left menu.
Click the underlined title of the word list you want to use.
Click Assign Activity.
Select Write a story using the spelling words.
Choose the assignment status: Active, Inactive, or Scheduled.
Click Next.
Choose the students or classes you want to assign the activity to.
Click Create Assignment.
How Students Complete the Activity
Students write an original short story using each of the assigned spelling or vocabulary words at least once.
As students write, the assigned word list acts as a writing aid. When an assigned word is spelled exactly as it appears in the list and used in the story, it will turn green and be counted as used. Students can also see how many of their assigned words they have used as they write.
These checkmarks are not the student's grade. They help students keep track of which assigned words they have included.
If students are not ready to submit the activity, they can click Save for Later to save their work and return to it later.
When the student is ready to submit the completed story, they will click Finish. The final score is determined after the activity is finished.
For example, the writing aid looks for the exact assigned word. A word such as cat will not be checked off if the student writes cats instead.
After students finish the activity, feedback may take a few minutes to appear.
Student View:
Hiding Student Reports
Teachers can choose to hide detailed reports from students.
Click My Assignments.
Find the activity and click the underlined activity title.
Under Security Settings, check Hide Student Reports.
When student reports are hidden, students can still see their score, but detailed reports and feedback will not be available to them. Uncheck this option to make the reports available again.
Viewing Reports as a Teacher
Teachers can review each student's story and detailed feedback from their teacher account.
Click Results in the left menu.
Click the underlined title of the activity you want to review.
In the panel that opens on the right, click Responses next to a student's name.

Word use
Coherence
Mechanics
Words used
Words missing
Words misspelled
Teachers can also leave an optional comment for the student. The comment will appear in the student's review.
Viewing Reports as a Student
After students finish the activity, feedback may take a few minutes to appear.
Students can view their score and feedback by clicking Results in the left menu of their student account, then clicking the blue View Responses button under the activity.

Any comments left by the teacher
Students do not see Teacher next steps.
How the Activity Is Scored
Each assigned word is worth 1 point.
A student earns the point when the assigned word:
Appears in the story
Is spelled correctly
Is used with the correct meaning
If a word is missing, misspelled, or used incorrectly, the student does not receive the point for that word.
Students can receive partial credit.
Story quality, grammar, and punctuation are included in feedback under areas such as Coherence and Mechanics, but they do not change the student's score.
