Using the Adyen S1F2 Terminal in Standalone Mode for the Payment Module

Configure your terminal, process sales and refunds, and resolve common issues — without a POS connection.

Overview

This guide explains how to configure and use the Adyen S1F2 payment terminal in standalone mode, meaning without a connection to a point-of-sale (POS) system. All transactions are initiated directly from the terminal screen.

What this guide covers

  • Setup: charging the terminal and loading the paper roll

  • Sales: processing a contactless, chip, or magnetic stripe payment

  • Refunds: two methods depending on whether the original transaction is available or not

  • Cancellations: why they are not available on this terminal and what to do instead

  • Receipt reprinting and common troubleshooting

How to use the terminal

Getting to know your terminal

Important: Your terminal does not require an end-of-day close or batch settlement. Adyen handles settlement automatically every business day — there is nothing to do at the end of the day.

Setting up the terminal

  1. Fully charge the terminal using the included USB-C cable before first use. Allow at least 4 hours for a full charge.

  2. Locate the paper compartment cover on the back of the terminal.

  3. Lift or slide open the compartment cover.

  4. Place the paper roll so that it unrolls from the bottom.

  5. Guide the free end of the paper up toward the top of the terminal, toward the screen.

  6. Close the cover firmly until it clicks into place, then tear off the excess paper.

Note: Use only 57–58 mm wide thermal paper. Regular paper will not print.

Processing a sale

  1. On the home screen, tap Payment.

  2. Enter the transaction amount using the on-screen keypad.

  3. Tap Confirm.

  4. Hand the terminal to the customer, who presents their card in one of the following ways:

    • Contactless / NFC: tap the card, phone, or smartwatch on the screen

    • Chip: insert the card into the reader at the bottom

    • Magnetic stripe: swipe the card through the side reader

  5. The customer follows the on-screen instructions, such as entering their PIN.

  6. A green screen means the transaction is approved. A red screen means it was declined — ask the customer to try another card.

  7. The terminal automatically prints a receipt.

Processing a refund

There are two ways to proceed. Use the referenced refund whenever possible.

Option A — Referenced refund (recommended)

Use when the original transaction was processed on this terminal.

  1. Tap Transactions on the home screen.

  2. Locate and select the original transaction.

  3. Select Refund.

  4. Confirm the refund amount — adjust only for a partial refund.

  5. Tap Confirm. A refund receipt will print.

Option B — Unreferenced refund

Use only if the original transaction does not appear in the terminal's history.

  1. Tap Transactions, then New Transaction.

  2. When a PIN is requested, enter 5773.

  3. Select Refund.

  4. Enter the refund amount and tap Confirm.

  5. Hand the terminal to the customer so they can present their original card.

  6. A refund receipt will print once the transaction is approved.

Note: Refunds do not generate a traditional authorization code — this is standard practice in the payment industry. Use the PSP reference number printed on the receipt as the official transaction identifier.

Cancelling a transaction

Cancellations (voids) are not available on the Adyen S1F2 in standalone mode. Adyen is configured with immediate capture: as soon as a transaction is authorized, it is captured and submitted for settlement within seconds, leaving no window for a cancellation.

If a transaction was processed in error or a customer needs to be refunded, process a refund instead.

  2. Select Transactions, then History.

  3. Locate and select the desired transaction.

  4. Select Receipts.

Settlement

Adyen automatically groups and settles all transactions every business day — no batch close is required.

  • All transactions are captured automatically throughout the day

  • Funds are deposited Monday through Friday (weekend transactions roll over to the next business day)

  • Settlement reports are available through the ValPay partner dashboard

Tip: Simply ensure the terminal is charged and connected to Wi-Fi or 4G each day.

Troubleshooting

Issue

Solution

Terminal won't turn on

Charge via USB-C for 30+ minutes, then hold the power button for 5 seconds

Receipt won't print

Check that the paper unrolls from the bottom and that the cover is fully closed

Receipt prints blank

Use thermal paper — regular paper will not print

Card not reading

Try in order: contactless, chip, magnetic stripe. Clean the reader if debris is visible

Transaction declined

Ask the customer to try another card. Do not retry the same card multiple times in quick succession

"No connection" message

Check Wi-Fi. The terminal automatically switches to 4G if Wi-Fi is unavailable

Go to Admin > Transactions > History. Search by date and amount is available

Terminal freezes

Hold the power button for 10 seconds to restart. All data is stored in Adyen's cloud
