Important Note: Próspera Residency vs. Honduran Immigration

While Próspera offers its own residency program, it is crucial to understand that it does not replace Honduran immigration requirements. Próspera is located within Honduras, and if you're planning to reside in Honduras, you must go through the country's immigration process even if you hold a Próspera residency. Próspera Residency does not grant automatic entry to Honduras.

What to Expect Upon Arrival in Honduras

When you land in Honduras, you'll first go through customs, where border control agents will review your passport and confirm your entry requirements. It is very important that you check with your local consulate or the Honduran Embassy what the specific entry requirements are for your country.

Typical Entry Requirements for Honduras:

  • Passport validity: Your passport must be valid for at least six months from your date of entry.

  • Tourist Visa: Most travelers, including U.S., Canadian, and EU citizens, do not need a visa for stays up to 90 days. However, depending on your nationality, a visa may be required before your arrival. Check the list here to see the 112 countries whose citizens can travel to Honduras without a visa. If you are unsure about your visa requirements, check with your local consulate or the Honduran Embassy.

    • Note: If you say you are traveling for business, you will only be granted a 30 day stay.

  • Proof of Return/Onward Travel is required. If you do not have a return ticket, you may not be granted the full tourist visa 90 day stay.

  • Vaccinations: Please check if there are vaccine requirements specific to your country.

    • Honduras requires South American travelers or residents to present proof of yellow fever vaccine.

    • All COVID-19-related requirements to enter Honduras have been lifted, and Honduras has no quarantine requirements.

If you want to extend your visa after 90 days:

Visit the Roatán Immigration Office 5 business days before your initial departure date (the one stamped in your passport) or work with an immigration attorney.

Honduran Residency

If you intend to stay long-term, you'll begin your Honduran residency application process once you're on the island. The immigration process can take anywhere from 3 to 9 months, but as long as your filings are submitted, you are permitted to live and work in Honduras while awaiting the official permit (be sure to confirm this with your immigration attorney).

Documents/actions needed when filing the immigration application:

  • Contact address and phone number of the place where you will reside.

  • Recent photograph (6 cm height by 5 cm width), taken from the front, with the name written on the back as appropriate.

    • You can bring from abroad, or take one in Ricardo’s office in Roatan (‪+1 (814) 699‑0481‬)

  • Criminal record certification from the country of origin, legalized/apostilled, and authorized in a foreign language, translated into Spanish by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or in the consulates of Honduras

    • If you live in Duna, you can use the address St. John's Bay, Prospera ZEDE, Roatan, Islas de la Bahia. The Duna office can help with the translation and request the official authorization

  • Medical certification issued by a medical professional on the official letterhead of the Medical College of Honduras, issued within six months prior to the application.

    • Phone number to a doctor on the island: Dr Oscar (‪+504 9946‑9799‬). He can come to your home for an extra pay.

  • Photocopy of the first page of the passport

    • You'll need a proper scan - one is available in the Duna building.

  • A certificate from the bank in Honduras for the processing of residency in the amount of $2500.

    • There is a national bank (Banco DAVIVIENDA) in Roatan, go there to open the account. After 2w you will get the ‘Proof of application’ that can be used to travel into and outside of Honduras until you get the full immigration permit.

  • Proof of employment from the company or institution that he/she is receiving the $2,500.

  • Proof of Deposit

    • Need to deposit minimum $2500 in your Honduras bank account before you can submit the full filing.

For internationals:

  • The above process applies to all countries except the ones mentioned in this list. For those countries, you must first obtain a visa to visit Honduras. After that, the process will be the same as for any other country. If you’re in Asia, there are still a few Honduran embassies there from which you can obtain the visa, eg Tokyo, Seoul, Kuwait and Beijing.

Misc:

  • If you need a tax ID, you can get it immediately by going the to Tax office in Roatan with your passport.

  • If you're planning on staying for a longer time in Honduras, you can request up to 90 days from the border control agent. They'll write the number of days granted to you on your passport.
