Learning Outcomes

  • Understand the different visualisations available for Location data in TRAC's Content Insights.

If you're using TRAC's Content Insights subpage to analyse data, you'll likely be interested in understanding the different locations within your dataset. Thankfully, TRAC provides several visualisations to help you do just that.

Country Breakdown

The Country Breakdown map shows the geographical location of the authors of the posts in your dataset by country, or by state. The map also shows the overall sentiment generated by the authors located in each state or country.

City Breakdown

The City Breakdown map shows the geographical location of the authors of the posts in your dataset by city. The map also shows the overall sentiment generated by the authors located in those cities.

Geo- Coordinates

Geo-Coordinates shows you where contributors are posting from. In some instances, you can look at this through street level.

What other information can the Locations tab give me?

When viewing country or city level, we give you the overall Sentiment of posts coming from that location.

Sentiment in Locations will present you with the information such as City name or Country name and then visualise the sentiment with colours:

  • Green = Positive

  • Red = Negative

  • Grey = Neutral

You will also get the total number of mentions that include sentiment and the percentages of each sentiment.

How does Pulsar analyse Locations?

  • For X we use X's Profile Geo enrichment, which looks at the profile_country_code or profile_region. X's Profile Geo enrichment attempts to determine the best choice for the geographic place described in the author's profile location. The result may not be accurate in all cases due to factors such as multiple places with similar names or ambiguous names. If location is not provided in a userโ€™s profile location field, X will not attempt to make a classification and as such on Pulsar it's normal that we will miss some tweets. We also look for geo-tagged tweets, where at the time of posting the user has tagged the tweet with a place or location that matches the specific country.

  • For News, Blogs, Forums, YouTube and Tumblr, we filter for the location using the country_code of the domain or the author location (if available).

  • For Reviews, the country filter is based on the source (e.g. all reviews from Amazon.com will automatically be associated with the country USA).

  • For Instagram, there is no location information available. Following the changes to Instagram, this information is no longer available as such Instagram data will always be "unknown" location.

  • For Facebook, the data we collect in a Topic search or Panel Search is from Facebook Pages not Facebook users. If we have the page's specific country then we apply this as the location of the post.
