We understand that adding Instagram tokens can be a confusing process! So we've created this article to help you go through the steps necessary to add Instagram tokens to your searches and profiles!

There are 4 main checkboxes that need to be filled in order to add an Instagram token on the platform:

  1. You'll need a Facebook Business Manager Account.

  2. The Instagram profile you are trying to add a token from needs to be a Business Profile.

  3. The Instagram profile needs to be linked to the Facebook Business Manager Account.

  4. The Instagram profile needs to be linked to a Facebook Page attached to the Business Manager Account.

So we'll go through what you need for each of these in order.

Step 1: You'll need a Facebook Business Manager Account

If you do not already have a Facebook Business Manager account, go to: https://business.facebook.com/overview

  1. Click Create Account.

  2. Enter your business name.

  3. Enter your business email (see the screenshot below).

  4. Click Submit and you'll be redirected to your newly created Business Manager.

Once you’ve created your Business Manager it will look something like this:

You should get an email in your inbox saying to confirm your email address. Click on Confirm Now and it will take you to the Meta Business Settings page.

In the Facebook general page settings page, you’ll be able to see what privilege levels you have and can assign to others.

🚨 Important: Make sure that you have ‘Admin’ level access for any accounts you add, which is known as 'Allow full control'.

To find the page roles and to add people and give them admin access, follow the below steps:

Start typing the name of the person who you want to give access and select their name:

📒 Note: The Facebook profiles of the people you wish to add can be their personal Facebook profiles.

Scroll down, and then make sure you switch the 'Allow this person to have full control' toggle on. You will then need to enter your password for Facebook.

Once this has been done, their name will appear in the list below. This means they now have admin access to the FB page:

Step 2: The Instagram profile you are trying to add a token from needs to be a Business Profile.

Not sure if the profile you're trying to add is a Business Profile? There's an easy way to tell by looking at the profile on the mobile app. When on the profile's page, look beneath the username. If you see a grey description of the channel type, you're likely dealing with a Business profile. Also if you see there a phone number, an email address, a business category, and even the business’s physical location - that's likely a Business account.

The only exception to this are Creator Accounts, which also have this grey description. Unfortunately, Instagram currently provides no way to tell the difference between the two; but most applications of Instagram tokens work with Creator accounts as well!

Okay, so let's say you looked there and it's not a Business profile. What do you do now? If it's not your account, unfortunately, the train stops here: we won't be able to track accounts that are not Business profiles in any capacity.

If you do own the account, it's time to convert your Instagram Account into a Business Account on the Instagram Mobile app or on your Desktop. You can reverse back to a personal account at anytime, however, as soon as you do this you will invalidate any Instagram Business tokens you have created with this account.

Go to your Instagram page, then click into More:

Click into Settings:

Then, if you scroll down, you will see an option to Switch to Business Account (the account below is already a business account which is why it says switch to personal).

You'll have the option here to connect a Facebook Page, which we strongly recommend doing on this step. If you forget to or don't have a Facebook Page ready at this step, follow along with the instructions further down this article on connecting the page.

Step 3: The Instagram profile needs to be linked to the Facebook Business Manager Account.

Now that you have got both a Facebook Business Manager set up and your Instagram account converted into a Business account and connected to your Facebook Page, it’s time to link your Instagram account to your Business Manager.

Go back to your Facebook settings page, and click on Linked Accounts:

Then click on Connect Account:

You will be shown the below. Click Connect:

Click Confirm:

You will then be redirected to log into your Instagram account. Enter your login details and hit Log in:

You will then need to follow the steps to link the IG account. Once that is done, the IG account will show in your Facebook page settings like the below:

Step 4: The Instagram profile needs to be linked to a Facebook Page attached to the Business Manager Account.

What? I need a Facebook Page to use my Instagram account? Yes; Facebook requires your Instagram Business Account to be attached to a Facebook Page in order for us to get a token from it.

There are two ways to connect a Facebook Page and an Instagram Account, though you can only use the first method if you already have a Facebook page set up. Use the second method if you don't already have a Facebook Page that would be suitable to connect to your Instagram Account.

From your Facebook Page

Click on Linked Accounts:

Select Instagram and click on Connect Account:

The below box will pop up. Click Connect:

A new window will pop up which will direct you to login to your Instagram account. Enter your login details:

Once you have gone through the login, allow access and click connect. Once thats been done, the below box will appear which means you have successfully connected the Instagram account!

From your Instagram profile

  1. Go to your profile.

  2. Click the Edit Profile button beneath your bio.

  3. Go to See More in Accounts Centre and click.

  4. If you already have a page attached to your business profile, you should be able to select it here, if not; you will have the option to create a new Facebook page for the Instagram Account.

Okay! That wasn't so bad, was it?

Tokens can be pretty complex creatures, but such is the struggle in the modern day where people are much more protective of their data.

Still having issues? Check the following:

  • Verify you are an Admin of the Facebook Page attached to the Instagram account in your Facebook Business Manager.

  • Verify all permissions are granted to Pulsar via your Facebook Profile.

If even after all of this, you're running into issues, please contact us through Intercom! We'll do our best to help you set it up.
