What is Syndication?

News syndication refers to the distribution of news content, articles, or multimedia materials across various outlets. In this process, a news organisation or content provider makes its news stories available to multiple other organisations for publication or broadcast. The goal is to reach a broader audience and increase the visibility of the news content.

For example, a news story produced by The Times can be syndicated to various news outlets across the world, who then republish the story on their platforms. This allows the original content to reach a wider audience and provides additional exposure and traffic to the media outlets that republish them.

Why is Syndication Important?

Within the realm of syndication, Pulsar places a heightened focus on its impact on Media Reach, Visibility, and AVE metrics. Syndicated news, a powerful tool for extending content reach, transcends various media outlets, platforms, and geographic boundaries, ensuring a wider and more diverse audience. The heightened exposure significantly contributes to the widespread dissemination of information.

Recognising the vital role syndicates play, Pulsar acknowledges the necessity of spotlighting them, offering you absolute control over their management. This becomes especially crucial due to the potential inundation of duplicates that might inundate your searches, potentially elevating the costs associated with copyright payments. With just a click, our platform allows you the ability to filter out syndicates on the fly, removing noise instant on key metrics

Excluding Syndicates from a Search

In Pulsar, we understand that syndications can sometimes introduce unwanted noise in your searches and potentially lead to increased copyright costs. To address this, we've introduced a new exclusion filter in the Search Setup, empowering you to seamlessly exclude syndicates from your search results.

If the search you’re working on has either Online News, Print News, TV, Radio or Podcasts, you’ll see the below option:

When toggled on, the search will collect all matched syndicates and add them to the Rejected view under Feed. Once on this page, you’ll be able to view all rejected syndicates with an option to add them back into your search individually or in bulk.

Feed > Rejected

Identifying Syndicates

Feed

Identifying syndicates in Pulsar is a breeze – simply look out for the distinctive icon situated in the far-right corner of each content piece on the Feed page. The count refers to the number of syndicates nested within that article. This count is only available when syndicates are grouped.

Content Card

At the bottom of the Content Card (side panel) on the Feed page, there is a section labelled “Syndicates”. All of the syndicates that match the article will be collected here, similar to engagements for Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.

The total Social Shares, Visibility, Media Reach and Total AVE can be found in the top right corner.

Filter Syndicates within a Search

In the filter panel, there is a new option that allows you to include or exclude syndicates within a search, you can do this by simply clicking on the Filter Panel → Target → Syndication.

Group Syndicates

News content can often have lots of syndicates which can inflate volume-based metrics and charts in your search. So, as well as filtering at 'Search' level, we've also introduced a toggle that allows you to quickly group syndicates, which will give you an accurate picture of original content.

By enabling the Group Syndicates toggle, all syndicates will be grouped under the original news article which is determined by published date. Once grouped, all volume-based metrics will be impacted as the syndicates are grouped under the original article. All other metrics will not change when grouped because they do not change whether the content is grouped or ungrouped.

Exclude Syndicates

Want to remove the noise from your search entirely? We've got you covered! Introducing a new filter that allows you to quickly exclude syndicates from your search. The exclude filter can be found on the Filter → Target → Syndicates

Email Alerts

When creating Email Alerts on Pulsar, there are now new options to exclude syndicates from your alerts as well as group them together.

Exclude: We’ll only send the original article, syndicates will be excluded from the alert.

Group: When syndicates are grouped, we'll send you the original media item with the total number of syndicates and metrics summed.

By default, we’ll send all syndicates with your Email Alerts

Managing Syndicates

After a new story breaks, we continue checking for syndicates for up to 72 hours to help ensure we've captured as many syndicates as possible even though the majority of syndicates are published within the first 24 hours. Although rare, sometimes syndicates could be published 72 hours after the first new story broke and for that reason, we wanted to make sure there was a workflow to handle such cases.

Managing syndicates allows users to Merge syndicates into a group as well as remove them. There are two ways to manage syndicates in Pulsar, via the Bulk Actions menu or in the Content Card, both of which are located in the Feed.

It is not possible to bulk manage syndicates from different data sources, i.e Online News and Print

Bulk Actions

  1. Select one or more results

  2. Click on the "Manage Syndicates" icon located in the Bulk Actions menu

Content Card

  1. Find content that has syndicates within the Feed

  2. Scroll to the bottom of the Content Card

  3. Select one or more results

  4. Click on the "Manage Syndicates" icon

Manage Syndicates

Once you've selected the content you'd like to manage, you'll have two options:

  • Merge - This action will add the selected articles to an existing group or subsequently create a new group if syndicates aren't present.

If two single articles are selected, we'll take the first published article as the syndicate lead post.

  • Remove - This action will remove any selected content from a syndication group
