If NinjaTrader 8 won't open or launch, work through the steps below in order — from ending stuck processes and rebooting, through workspace and repair checks, to a full clean reinstall.
Step #1: End Processes Manually and Reboot Your VPS
If NinjaTrader won't open, the first thing to do is ensure all NinjaTrader processes are fully closed.
Open Task Manager by right-clicking the taskbar and selecting Task Manager (or press Ctrl + Shift + Esc).
Make sure you're on the Processes tab. On current versions of Windows 10, Windows 11, and Windows Server, Task Manager opens directly to this full view — there's no separate "More details" toggle to click through as there was on older Windows releases.
Look for any entries named NinjaTrader.exe, NinjaTrader.Server.exe, or similar.
Select each one and click End Task (this button appears at the top of the window in the redesigned Windows 11/Server Task Manager, or in the bottom-right corner on older versions).
Once no NinjaTrader entries remain, reboot your VPS or server.
After rebooting, try launching NinjaTrader again.
If it still does not open, continue to Step 2.
Step #2: Remove Potentially Faulty Workspaces
Sometimes NinjaTrader fails to launch because one of your saved workspaces is corrupted. Before doing a full reinstall, try this quick workspace reset:
Close all applications (including NinjaTrader if it's partially open).
Navigate to your Documents folder → open the NinjaTrader 8 folder.
Locate the workspaces folder inside it.
Inside, you'll see one or more
.xmlfiles — each represents a workspace (for example,Untitled1.xml,MyStrategy.xml, etc.).Move all of these files to a temporary folder on your desktop (or rename the
workspacesfolder toworkspaces OLD).Once done, relaunch NinjaTrader 8.
If NinjaTrader opens successfully after this, it confirms that one of your workspaces was corrupted. You can then copy your workspace files back one at a time to identify which one causes the issue.
If it still does not open, continue to Step 3.
Step #3: Repair the Existing Installation
In many cases, NinjaTrader fails to launch because certain system files were accidentally removed — either manually or by cleanup/optimization software. Instead of reinstalling right away, let's first repair the installation.
In the Windows taskbar search box, type Control Panel and open it.
Navigate to Programs → Programs and Features.
Locate NinjaTrader 8 in the list.
Right-click it and select Repair.
If "Repair" is unavailable, choose Change, then follow the on-screen instructions.
Once complete, launch NinjaTrader 8 again.
If the platform still does not open after the repair, proceed to Step 4.
Step #4: Perform a Clean Uninstall and Reinstall
If the repair did not resolve the issue, the next step is a clean reinstall. This will help determine whether the problem lies within your user files or the installation itself.
Important: Follow these steps carefully to avoid any data loss. Renaming the folder (rather than deleting it) ensures all of your existing workspaces, templates, indicators, and settings remain safely preserved. You can restore them later if needed.
Close all running applications.
Navigate to your Documents folder.
Right-click the NinjaTrader 8 folder → Rename → change the name to NinjaTrader 8 OLD.
Do not delete this folder — it contains your existing workspaces, templates, and configurations.
Open Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features and uninstall NinjaTrader 8.
Navigate to
C:\Program Files (x86)and delete any remaining NinjaTrader 8 folder (if present).Reboot your PC or VPS.
Download and reinstall NinjaTrader 8 from the official site: https://ninjatrader.com/GetStarted
After installing, launch NinjaTrader 8. If it now opens normally, that confirms your previous installation or user workspace was corrupted.
Restoring Your Data (Optional)
If the new installation works correctly, you can carefully restore your old data:
Close NinjaTrader.
Go to your Documents folder.
Delete or rename the new NinjaTrader 8 folder (e.g., to NinjaTrader 8 NEW).
Rename NinjaTrader 8 OLD back to NinjaTrader 8.
Re-launch NinjaTrader.
If the issue returns after restoring the old folder, it means something within your prior workspace or a third-party add-on was causing the problem. In that case, you can revert to the clean installation (using the NinjaTrader 8 NEW folder) and manually re-import only essential templates or indicators.
