We send you a telematics device, which is small enough to fit into the palm of your hand, by Royal Mail. It usually takes a couple of days to reach you.

There's no waiting around for engineers to arrive, no one fiddling around under your dashboard, and if you change your vehicle, you can move your device yourself.

Depending on your vehicle’s compatibility, you’ll either get a stick-on device or a plug-in device.

The plug-in device

The plug-in device is an Onboard Diagnostics (OBD) device. We post the device out to you and you follow the instructions included to plug it in to your vehicle’s OBD port – this is usually near your steering wheel and only takes a few seconds.

It draws minimal power from your vehicle and sends us data directly.

When you leave us, you can unplug the device.

The stick-on device

It's a small, round box that fits in the palm of your hand. Inside, there's an accelerometer, GPS and a battery designed to last for at least your policy year.

We post the device out to you and you stick it to your windscreen.

Download the RAC Black Box app and pair it with your device. The device then collects data and sends it to us via your app. This will have a minimal effect on your data plan.

When you leave us, you can take the device off your windscreen.
