Do I fit the telematics device myself?

Do I need an appointment to fit my device?

After you've bought your policy, we send you a small telematics device by Royal Mail. It usually takes a couple of days to reach you.

There's no waiting around for engineers to arrive, no one fiddling around under your dashboard, and if you change your vehicle, you can move your device yourself.

Depending on your vehicle’s compatibility, you’ll either get a stick-on device or a plug-in device.

The plug-in device

The plug-in device is an Onboard Diagnostics (OBD) device. We post the device out to you and you follow the instructions included to plug it in to your vehicle’s OBD port – this is usually near your steering wheel and only takes a few seconds.

The plug-in device sends us data on how you drive so we can work out your renewal price at the end of the year.

  • The plug-in device draws minimal power from your vehicle and sends us data directly

  • If the OBD location is inconvenient, please start a chat and we'll look into it for you

  • When you leave us, you can unplug the device

The stick-on device

The stick-on device is a small, round box that fits in the palm of your hand. Inside, there's an accelerometer, GPS and a battery designed to last for at least your policy year.

  1. We post the stick-on device out to you and you stick it to your windscreen

  2. You download the RAC Black Box app and pair it with your device

  3. The device then collects data and sends it to us via your app (this will have a minimal effect on your data plan) so we can work out your renewal price

When you leave us, you can take the stick-on device off your windscreen.
