How do I find a specific contact quickly?

There are two ways to find a contact: the search bar in the top navigation, and the search box on the Contacts page. Use the top navigation search bar when you want to jump to a contact from anywhere in the app. Use the Contacts page search when you want to filter results and keep browsing the full list.

Top navigation search bar

The search bar is always visible in the top navigation. Click it or press Cmd+K (Mac) or Ctrl+K (Windows/Linux) to open it from any page.

Type at least two characters to start seeing results. The search bar matches contacts by:

  • Name (first name, last name, or both together)

  • Email address (type the @ symbol to trigger email matching)

  • Phone number (type digits to trigger phone number matching)

It also matches text in interaction notes. If you remember something you wrote in a note about a contact but not the contact's name, searching for words from the note will surface the contact.

Results appear as you type. Click a result or use the arrow keys and press Enter to open the contact's profile. Press Escape to close the search bar.

Contacts page search box

On the Contacts page, there is a search box above the table. This search filters the table in place and matches contacts by:

  • Name

  • Email address

  • Phone number

  • Employer

  • Occupation

  • Full address

Type in the box and the table updates to show only matching contacts. You can combine the search box with filters from the filter builder to narrow results further, for example searching by name while also filtering by tag or donation amount.

Which to use

Use the top navigation search bar when you want to go directly to a single contact's profile. Use the Contacts page search when you want to see a filtered list, apply additional filters, or take bulk actions on the results.
