How do I handle a donor who changed their name?

Edit the existing contact record directly. There is no need to create a new record or re-import the donor.

Open the contact record

Navigate to the contact's profile page. The full name is displayed as a heading near the top of the profile.

Enter edit mode

Click on the name heading. The heading is replaced by a row of text fields:

  • Title (Dr., etc.) for a prefix such as "Dr." or "Sen."

  • Nickname for a preferred or informal name that differs from the legal name

  • First Name

  • Middle Name

  • Last Name

  • Suffix (Jr., etc.) for a generational or credential suffix

  • Pronouns

Edit the fields

Update whichever fields have changed. If the donor now goes by a different first name but you still want to record the legal name, enter the preferred name in Nickname and leave First Name as the legal given name.

Save

Press Enter in any field, or click anywhere outside the name fields. The form saves automatically when focus leaves it. The name heading updates immediately to reflect the change.

What changes and what does not

All call logs, donation records, pledges, and notes already attached to the contact remain linked. The contact's history is preserved. Only the displayed name fields change.
