You can insert a contact's name directly into the subject line or body of any email campaign using merge tags. When the campaign sends, each tag is replaced with the matching value from that contact's record.
Available name merge tags
| Tag | What it inserts | |---|---| | {firstName} | Contact's first name | | {lastName} | Contact's last name | | {nickNameOrFirstName} | Nickname if one is set, otherwise first name | | {fullName} | First and last name combined | | {prefix} | Honorific prefix (Dr., Mr., etc.) |
If a contact's record does not have a value for the field you used, the tag is replaced with nothing. No placeholder text appears in the sent email. For example, if a contact has no nickname, {nickNameOrFirstName} falls back to their first name. If they have neither, the tag is removed entirely.
How to insert a merge tag in the email composer
Open or create an email campaign and go to the email body editor.
Click inside any text block where you want the name to appear.
In the editor toolbar, open the merge tags menu (labeled "Merge Tags" in the toolbar).
Select the tag you want. The tag text is inserted at the cursor position.
You can also type the tag directly. For example, type {firstName} anywhere in the body or subject line and it will be recognized and replaced at send time.
Using a merge tag in the subject line
The subject line field accepts the same merge tags as the body. Type or paste the tag into the subject field while composing the campaign. For example:
`` Hi {firstName}, we wanted to reach out ``
The subject line is personalized for each recipient the same way the body is.
Previewing personalization before sending
Use the "Send Test Email" button to send a copy to yourself. The test email populates merge tags with sample values so you can see how the layout will look with a name inserted.
