These are discounts applied to the whole Unit. They are found under Members > Discounts and it's usually something not a lot of users in the association have the ability to edit. From there you can see by default all of the discounts that are active, search, and create a new discount by clicking Add Discount. Typically we import discounts when we do our initial import and it's up to the association to consolidate and build upon that.
Below are options available for membership discounts:
Name: This is what the discount will display as. Try to include the recognizable word that is used to refer to it.
Category: The category is used to group discount reports together more easily.
Status: The status controls whether or not the discount shows up as available in the future. It's important to know that deactivating a discount does NOT remove it from the units that already have it; it just prevents it from being applied towards new memberships.
Level: Each user on Core has a discount permission level. You can use the level to prevent certain users from applying certain discounts. The most common scenarios for these are Level 1 for discounts that the front desk need to apply while reserving Level 3 for discounts for free memberships that only some people in the association should have access to.
Start Date and End Date: These control are similar to status in that they only control availability when applying the discount and not when it gets removed from units.
Auto Remove Discount: You can use this control to automatically remove a discount a certain amount of time after it's been added to a membership. The most common scenario for this are associations that automatically remove a scholarship after X months. At the end of the time period the discount expires and the membership goes back to the normal rate. The discount expiration date can be changed manually per unit.
Subsidy Section: You can use this information to help identify points of contacts for items that are being subsidized by a 3rd party. If you select an organization all the items subsidised through this discount will be automatically listed under that organization. Organization can be added by user with the correct permissions under
Association > Organizations
and the optionSubsidize on Membership Discount
enabled in order to display in this dropdown.Applicable Membership Types: You can select all the membership types that the discount applies to. You can hold CTRL + click to select multiple.
Money, Money, Money: In this section you can set up how the discount affects the membership rates. The type designates if it's a percent amount (ex. 50%) vs. a fixed amount (ex. $5). Amount's should be entered as the amount to be discounted; not the amount to be discounted to.
Join: A discount amount to remove off the join fee specified by the membership type. Common example is 100% join fee .
Recurring: A discount amount that the association will not collect from the member or a 3rd party. Common examples are 20% scholarship or a $5 discount you might give to corporate members.
Subsidy: A discount amount that the association intends to collect from a 3rd party. Common examples are the amount you intend to collect from a corporation that pays for their employees.
Program: A discount to be applied automatically to any program that has been selected to be applicable for discounts. Common examples are if you give 20% discount to staff or if you automatically discount your membership scholarship recipients a specific program discount. Important: Membership discounts can discount program registrations. We call it a membership discount because it's applied at the membership unit level not because it only discounts membership amounts.
Specific Discount Adjustments:
Sometimes (maybe a lot of times for your association) the discount amounts are not a set dollar or percentage across the applicable membership types. For example, you give an individual a $5 discount and a family $10 but it's not necessary the same percentage off the original price. For these scenarios you can add a Specific Discount Adjustment
by selecting it and clicking Add
. Any amounts that you enter will override the amounts entered on the Money, Money, Money
section.
The most common issues when someone can't find a discount are they don't have the proper level permission to apply or the discount is not set to apply to the membership type they have selected.
