"Recent" depends on the document type and the property you're applying to. Here are general guidelines — each landlord can set their own requirements, but typically you'll want documents that are no older than 3 months.
Pay stubs and bank statements
Most recent — typically not older than 3 months. The latest statement or pay period is always best.
Tax returns
Most recent filed year. If you're applying early in the year and haven't filed yet, last year's return is fine.
1099 forms
Most recent year's 1099 form(s).
Benefit and award letters
The most current version available — typically less than a year old. Some letters are issued annually (Social Security cost-of-living letters, for example) and remain valid for the calendar year.
Offer letters
For a new job without pay stubs yet, a recent dated offer letter — usually within the last 30 days — is best.
What if my landlord wants something different?
Each property manager can set their own requirements. If your documents are reviewed and considered too old, you'll be asked to upload more recent versions. When in doubt, upload the most recent documents you have.
