Almost any kind of regular, documentable income counts. The key is choosing the verification method that fits your specific situation. Here's a guide by income type.
Paychecks from a job (W-2)
Direct deposit + major payroll provider: Payroll connection is the fastest. Search for your employer or payroll provider (Gusto, ADP, Paychex, Workday, etc.). If you do not find your employer on the list please consider using on of the other options to verify income.
Direct deposit, payroll not supported: Bank connection works just as well. Connect to your bank directly to select your pay deposits.
Paper check: Document upload — recent pay stubs.
Freelance, contractor, or gig work (1099)
Digital payments (Stripe, PayPal, Venmo, Cash App, ACH from gig platforms): Bank connection is the easiest. We pull deposits and you confirm them.
Some gig and contractor platforms also support payroll connection. Try the payroll option and search by your platform name.
Paper checks or unsupported platforms: Document upload — 1099 forms, tax returns, or bank statements showing client deposits. PDF is the preferred file format.
Self-employment or business ownership
If you run your own business or work for yourself, document upload is usually the right path. PDF is the preferred file format:
Most reliable: last year's tax return with Schedule C, K-1, or the relevant business schedule
Also accepted: year-to-date profit and loss statement, business bank statements
Government benefits
Government benefits count as income and verify the same way as a paycheck.
Direct deposit: Bank connection — Social Security, SSI, unemployment, disability, and VA benefits all show up as deposits.
Document upload: Benefit Verification Letter, recent benefit statement, or award letter. PDF is the preferred file format.
You can request a Benefit Verification Letter from the SSA at ssa.gov/myaccount/.
Retirement and investment income
Pension or retirement direct deposit: Bank connection works.
Periodic distributions: Document upload — 1099-R, brokerage statements, or pension award letter. PDF is the preferred file format.
Dividend or interest income: Document upload — 1099-DIV, 1099-INT, or recent brokerage statements. PDF is the preferred file format.
Other income
Alimony or child support: Document upload — court order plus bank statements showing deposits. PDF is the preferred file format.
Rental income (from properties you own and rent out): Document upload — Schedule E from your tax return, lease agreements, or bank deposits showing rent payments received. PDF is the preferred file format.
Trust fund or family support: Document upload — trust statements or a signed letter from the person providing support. PDF is the preferred file format.
Multiple income sources?
You can connect or upload for each income source separately. If you have a primary job and a side gig, verify them independently — we'll add them together. You can utilize whichever income verification method suits the income source best.
Just started a new job?
If you don't have pay stubs yet, try payroll connection first — pay stubs often appear in your payroll account before deposits clear in your bank. If neither shows pay yet, upload your offer letter as a temporary verification. PDF is the preferred file format.
Don't have any income right now?
Check first — government benefits like Social Security, SSI, unemployment, and disability all count. If you genuinely have no current income, document upload offers a path forward.
