Processing gift cards or credit to your Shopify shoppers is easy with the ReturnLogic Originate Module by following these steps.

Shopify Plus

Shopify Plus subscriptions provide access to the Gift Card API, allowing the ReturnLogic platform to automatically generate the gift card on processing.

Step-by-step:

  1. Find the RMA that you wish to process in the RMA Overview. You can search for an RMA using the RMA Number, Order Number or a variety of other fields.

  2. Select the RMA by clicking the highlighted RMA number or edit icon.

  3. Approve the items that you wish to issue gift card amounts for. At least one item must be selected to process the gift card but you do not need to approve every item if the returned item does not meet your return policy.

  4. Optionally modify the values to set the appropriate gift card amount. You can adjust discounts, taxes, shipping deductions or apply an arbitrary fee or deduction.

  5. Once you are satisfied with the gift card amount displayed, simply click the "Process" button and the gift card will be generated in your Shopify account.

  6. You can view the gift card details at the bottom left corner where it says store credit.

7. When you are finished processing all of the return types make sure to complete the RMA by marking it as processed.

Shopify / Shopify Advanced

Shopify / Shopify Advanced subscriptions do not provide access to the Gift Card API, therefore, the gift card must be created manually. ReturnLogic provides a toolset allowing you to easily override the automatic gift card creation and still provide your shoppers the option to choose credit over a refund.

4. Optionally, you may modify the values to set the appropriate gift card amount. You can adjust discounts, taxes, shipping deductions or apply an arbitrary fee or deduction.

5. Once you are satisfied with the gift card amount displayed, click the pencil next to Store Credit and then select the Apply Override link.

6. The Gift Card Override dialog will open and the total amount will be pre-populated.

7. Using the Gift Card administration link provided, open the Shopify Gift Card page.

8. Click Issue Gift Card.

Copy the gift card code. This is very important! You will need to paste it into place during the next step. Enter the gift card details including the value, shopper, and optional expiry date.  Click the Activate button.

9. Paste the gift card code into the Gift Card Code section, input in the Override Gift Card window and optionally set the expiration date.

10. Click the Save button. The Override Gift Card window will close.

11. Click the Process button. The Gift Card items will be marked as processed.

12. When you are finished processing all of the return types make sure to complete the RMA by marking it as processed.

How can I enable automatic store credit and gift card functionality?

When configuring your settings within ReturnLogic, a Shopify Plus account or a Shopify account can be integrated. The type of Shopify account you have will determine your ability to automatically issue gift cards/store credit within ReturnLogic.

In order to issue store credit in Shopify, ReturnLogic uses the Gift Card functionality.

Shopify Plans & API Capabilities

  1. Plans: Automated gift card creation and automated store credit processing are only available to Shopify Plus merchants due to API restrictions placed by the Shopify platform.

  2. Settings: This API functionality is not enabled by default and will require you to reach out to your account representative requesting that it be enabled. If you intend to utilize the ReturnLogic store credit and gift card features, the example template below may be helpful.

  3. Manual options: Shopify Plans can still issue store credit and gift cards with ReturnLogic but not in a way that is automated via the API. Please refer to the Shopify Plan Types section below for more information on Shopify API capabilities.

Shopify Plan Types

  1. Shopify Plus users can use the API integration with ReturnLogic to automatically issue gift cards and store credit to shoppers. For more information about the Shopify Plus plan and what API capabilities it offers, please click here.

  2. Shopify Plan users, however, will not have access to the same gift card API abilities and therefore will not have the same gift card abilities within ReturnLogic. To review what capabilities the Shopify Plan provides, click here

Gift Card/ Store Credit Automation Meaning

When you hit process within the RMA page, the gift card is automatically created for the shopper. The RMA will enter the processed status.

Below is an example of an approved RMA that has yet to be processed. If you hit the green "Process" button, the gift card/ store credit will be issued to the shopper automatically.

Here is what it will look like after you hit the "Process" button. Notice that a new link has appeared at the bottom left-hand side of the page.

If you click on the store credit link at the bottom left-hand corner of the RMA page, it will bring you to the Shopify page that captures the store credit/gift card information in the timeline. As you can see in the timeline, the shopper was automatically sent an email with a gift card.

If your gift card API permissions are not correct, you will see a processing error message appear when you try to process the RMA.

If you click the blue view link, it will show this error:

The RMA will not process when this error appears.

If you do not have Shopify plus or you are waiting for your Shopify support representative to assist you, you can proceed by manually creating a gift card. For information on manual gift card creation, click here.

ReturnLogic and Shopify Plus account integration

If you are using a Shopify Plus store and have contacted Shopify about your interest in using this functionality, you should be able to automatically issue gift cards to shoppers. This permission can only be enabled by a Shopify Plus representative and would not have been enabled during your ReturnLogic onboarding.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Confirm you have a Shopify Plus plan.

  2. Contact your Shopify Merchant Success Manager to enable gift card adjustment permissions.

  3. If you have already contacted your Customer Success Manager and you are still running into issues, ask the Shopify Plus Support to confirm that the settings are correct.
