About Monk Mode
"Monk Mode" in Roots is a feature that helps you stay focused by enforcing strict app blocking.
Once enabled, you cannot disable the restrictions, ensuring you stick to your screen time goals without distractions. It's designed for deep work, study sessions, or digital detox periods.
How to access "Monk Mode":
When creating or editing a block in Roots:
Go to Blocking in the app
Select or create a block (Time Limit, Downtime, or All Day blocks)
When choosing your difficulty setting, select "Monk Mode"
Tap Done to activate
Worried about being stuck? Here's your safety net:
We totally understand feeling nervous about "Monk Mode" - but don't worry, we've got you covered with two safety features:
1) "Pause"
Go to Roots > Blocking > Pause (top of the screen)
This temporarily pauses all blocking so you can take a break or make edits
Tap Resume Blocking when you're ready to continue
2) "Emergency Unblock"
Go to Roots > Help (top of the screen)
Scroll down to Emergency Unblock
Follow the instructions
Perfect for vacations, extended emergencies, or unexpected situations
These features give you peace of mind knowing you're never truly "locked in" - but the added friction helps you avoid impulsive unblocking and stick to your goals!
Important reminder:
"Pauses" and "Emergency Unblocks" are designed to be used sparingly for genuine needs. Using them too frequently can reduce their effectiveness in helping you stay on track with your screen time goals. The intentional friction of "Monk Mode" is what makes it so powerful - embrace the commitment, and you'll see real results!
