Every traveler must meet the minimum age for the state where their pharmacy is located. If the traveler is under that age, they aren't eligible for SafeGard, and an intake can't be completed for them, including by a parent or guardian.

Is the minimum age based on where I live?

No. The minimum age is based on where the pharmacy is located, not where the traveler lives.

For example, if you live in Georgia (minimum age 18) but choose a participating pharmacy in Tennessee (minimum age 3), Tennessee's minimum age applies. You'll need to visit that pharmacy in person.

Minimum age by state

Minimum age varies significantly by state due to local regulations.

  • 5 years or older: Kentucky, Ohio

  • 6 years or older: Idaho

  • 7 years or older: Illinois, Montana

What you'll see in the intake

When you select your pharmacy's state, you'll see that state's age requirement. If the traveler is under it, the message turns red and you won't be able to choose a pharmacy or continue.

Using a pharmacy in another state

If you can get to a participating pharmacy in another state with a lower minimum age, you can choose that pharmacy instead. See Can I use a pharmacy in a different state?
