How to pre-approve mental health treatments

Pre-approval, pre-authorization, direct billing, psychologist, psychiatrist, therapy

Seeking mental health care with your SafetyWing plan? You’re in the right place!

Your plan's outpatient benefit includes coverage for mental health treatment, up to your plan-specific session limit. This allows you to visit a psychologist, a psychiatrist, or a therapist.

⚠️ Mental health visits require a medical report from a psychiatrist or treating physician. Your first appointment with a licensed provider doesn’t require pre-approval, but pre-approval is required for continuous mental health treatment

If you’re seeing a psychologist or therapist without visiting a psychiatrist, we need a medical order from a licensed physician detailing your diagnosis and any relevant symptoms.

⏱️ Timeline: The pre-approval review takes up to 7 business days.

Below is a step-by-step guide to using your mental health benefit with SafetyWing.

Documents required

All documents must be provided on the provider’s letterhead and be signed and stamped by the provider.

1. Medical report

A medical report from your psychiatrist or treating physician must include:

  • The date your symptoms first appeared

  • Your diagnosis and ICD-10 code

  • Details of any related previous treatments you've received

  • Any relevant medical history

  • A medical order for your treatment

❗ Important: Since psychologists and therapists can’t legally provide medical diagnoses, your medical report must be provided by a licensed psychiatrist or licensed physician qualified to make clinical diagnoses.

2. Treatment plan

A treatment plan from your psychiatrist or psychologist must include:

  • How often the sessions will take place

  • The types of services you’ll receive

3. Cost estimate

A cost estimate from your psychiatrist or psychologist must include:

  • The estimated cost per session

Completing the process

Step 1: Attend your initial visit

If you'll be treated by a psychiatrist

Ask your psychiatrist or licensed physician for a medical report. Attend your first appointment with the psychiatrist and ask for the treatment plan and cost estimate. This first visit does not require pre-approval.

If you'll be treated by a psychologist or therapist

Before attending your first session, you must visit a psychiatrist or licensed physician for a medical report and diagnosis.

After you’ve received a medical report, you can visit your psychologist. Be sure to ask them for their treatment plan and cost estimate. As mentioned, this first visit does not require pre-approval.

You’ll pay for your initial visits either out of pocket or with your SafetyWing Card. You can submit a reimbursement claim through your SafetyWing dashboard, where it will be assessed by our claims team.

Keep in mind that these initial visits count towards your plan’s mental health session limit.

You have up to 180 days from the appointment date to submit a reimbursement claim through your SafetyWing dashboard.

Step 2: Submit your pre-approval or direct billing request

Pre-approval can take up to 7 business days, so make sure you submit your request with at least that much time ahead of your next appointment.

This gives our medical team enough time to review your request and, if applicable, work with your provider to arrange direct billing.

To submit your request:

  1. Click the “Pre-approval or direct billing” button on your SafetyWing dashboard

  2. Complete the request form

  3. Attach all required documents

  4. Submit your request for review

Step 3: Wait for approval

Our team will keep you updated by email throughout the review process.
Once you receive confirmation that your treatment has been pre-approved, you can go ahead with your sessions.

If you requested direct billing, our medical team will work with your provider to arrange this.

If direct billing can’t be arranged, you can pay for your treatment out-of-pocket and submit a reimbursement claim through your SafetyWing dashboard after each appointment.

❗ Please note: Mental health treatment received without pre-approval may result in a 30% reduction in the eligible reimbursement amount.

The initial psychiatrist/physician and psychologist visits described above do not require pre-approval.
