Choosing your Underwriting Method, for Saga Health Insurance
Choosing your Underwriting Method, for Saga Health Insurance
Updated over a week ago

When you take out a Saga HealthPlan, you can choose from three different underwriting methods, depending on whether you’re taking out a policy for the first time or changing from another insurer or employer’s scheme.

The following will help you decide which underwriting method is right for your health insurance policy.

Moratorium:

Moratorium is the method used for our health insurance online quotations. This means that no medical declaration is necessary. We'll simply exclude treatment for any pre-existing medical conditions and certain specified conditions you or anyone on your policy has experienced or had symptoms of in the three years prior to joining.

If you remain free from any advice, medication or treatment for an excluded condition for a continuous period of two years after your policy starts, we may then be able to offer cover for those medical conditions, subject to a review by the claims team.

Full medical history underwriting:

If you choose this option, you will complete a medical history declaration for you and any family members you wish to be covered. We'll speak to your doctor, if necessary, take into account the history of any existing conditions and let you know whether we can cover you for them.

Full Medical History Underwriting method enables you to declare your medical history up-front making any exclusions clear at the start of your cover. If you would like this underwriting method, please contact the Saga Customer Care Team on 0800 056 9273 to discuss it further.

Continued personal medical exclusions (CMPE):

This option is only available if you already have cover with another insurer and you wish to switch from your current insurer and retain cover for your existing medical conditions. It depends on your recent medical and claims histories and the terms and conditions of your new policy but could suit you if you are leaving an employer’s scheme or moving from another health insurance plan.

This underwriting method is not available to purchase online. If you would like to get a quote for Continued Personal Medical Exclusions, please contact the Saga Customer Care Team on 0800 056 9273 to discuss it further.

Will my choice of underwriting method affect my premium?

Choosing between Moratorium and Full Medical History Underwriting will not affect your premium. However, if you choose Continued Personal Medical Exclusions, your premium will increase. This is because you will be retaining cover for some pre-existing medical conditions.
