Why does this matter?
As a licensed alcohol retailer, your store is ultimately responsible for ensuring that alcohol is only sold and delivered to customers who are of legal drinking age. SauceyDirect provides the technology and delivery infrastructure, but compliance with local, state, and federal laws remains your responsibility as the merchant.
What are drivers required to do?
All delivery drivers dispatched through SauceyDirect are trained to check customer ID at the point of delivery. Drivers will:
Request a valid, government-issued photo ID from the person receiving the order
Verify the customer is 21 years of age or older
Refuse delivery if no valid ID is presented or if the recipient appears to be under 21
Refuse delivery if the recipient appears to be intoxicated
What should my staff know?
Your in-store staff play an important role before the order leaves the building. Before handing any order to a driver, staff should confirm:
The order has been correctly packed and matches what was submitted
Confirm the driver has marked the order as “picked up” in their driver app before leaving the store.
All items are sealed and compliant with your local open container laws
Any age-restricted items are clearly flagged if required by your local regulations
What are my liability responsibilities?
Your store operates under your own retail license. Failure to comply with age verification requirements can put your license at risk. SauceyDirect recommends consulting with your local licensing authority or legal counsel to understand your specific obligations.
Note: If you are ever unsure whether a delivery should proceed due to a compliance concern, err on the side of caution and contact SauceyDirect support.
