Best Practices for Product Photos & Descriptions

Why does this matter?

Your product listings are your virtual store shelf. Customers can't pick up and inspect a bottle before they buy — your photos and descriptions do that work for them. Well-presented listings lead to higher conversion, fewer returns, and better customer satisfaction.

Product photo best practices

  • Use the product's official label or packaging photo where available — these are the most recognizable to customers

  • Ensure photos are well-lit and high resolution — blurry or dark images reduce buyer confidence

  • Use a consistent background (white or light neutral) for a clean, professional look

  • Show the full bottle or package — don't crop out important label details

  • Avoid watermarks, promotional overlays, or text on product images

Product description best practices

  • Include the full product name, producer/brand, region or origin, and size/volume

  • Add tasting notes or style descriptors for wines and spirits — customers use these to make decisions

  • For beers, include ABV, style (IPA, lager, stout, etc.), and flavor profile

  • Keep descriptions concise — 2 to 4 sentences is ideal

  • Avoid copying manufacturer descriptions verbatim if possible — unique descriptions perform better in search

Pricing accuracy

Make sure your listed prices match what you charge in store. Discrepancies between your online and in-store pricing can cause customer complaints and chargebacks.

Note: Products with photos and descriptions consistently outsell those without. Even a basic photo and a one-line description is significantly better than a blank listing.
