To register a vehicle as part of establishing your new Texas domicile, the following steps are involved:
Obtaining a Physical Address: Before registering a vehicle, you need a confirmed address in the new state. This address will be used in the vehicle registration process. SavvyNomad will provide this to you.
Vehicle Inspection: Texas does not require a VIN inspection to register an out-of-state vehicle, and there is no emissions testing required in Aransas County. As of March 2025, Texas also eliminated the annual safety inspection sticker requirement for non-commercial vehicles. You do not need to bring your vehicle to Texas to register it.
Gathering Required Documents: You will need to collect several documents to register your vehicle. These include:
Your new Texas driver's license or your unexpired driver's license from your former state
The title to your vehicle (if there is no lien) or your current registration (if you have a lien)
Proof of Texas vehicle insurance
Your exact current odometer reading
If your vehicle has a lien, we can help you request that your bank mail your title to the Aransas County Tax Assessor-Collector's office.
Visiting the Tax Office: With your documents, visit the Aransas County Tax Assessor-Collector's office to submit your registration application. No appointment is required — simply arrive during business hours. Each person named on the vehicle's registration should be present. If someone cannot attend, they must complete Form VTR-271, Limited Power of Attorney for Eligible Motor Vehicle Transactions (download it here) in advance, so someone else can act on their behalf. Both people must include a photocopy of their photo ID. This form does not need to be notarized — it only requires original signatures in black or blue ink, with no alterations.
