How do I update or cancel my USPS automatic mail forward?

Written by Jameson Rader

A USPS automatic mail forward (officially a "change-of-address" order) re-routes mail from your old address to a new one. If you've already set one up, you can update or cancel it at any time. The most common reason to do so is to make sure your mail is being forwarded to your SavvyNomad mailing address — not your residential address.

Your residential address is a place of abode, not a mail forwarding address — it can only accept essential mail (government and tax correspondence, insurance cards, bank cards, and legal notices). Mail auto-redirected there can take up to 10 business days to be uploaded to your account, packages generally can't be accepted, and non-essential items may incur a $3-per-item fee.

Updating your existing forwarding order

  1. Go to USPS "Manage My Move": https://managemymove.usps.com

  2. Enter your confirmation code. You'll find it in the confirmation email USPS sent when you created the order, or in the Customer Notification Letter USPS mailed to you.

  3. Update the forwarding address to your SavvyNomad mailing address. You can view your mailing address on this step of your customer portal.

  4. Save your changes. USPS advises allowing up to 2 weeks for changes to take effect.

Canceling your forwarding order

You can manage or cancel your order from the same Manage My Move page, using your confirmation code.

Can't find your confirmation code?

Your local Post Office can update or cancel the forwarding order for you in person. Bring a photo ID, and your confirmation code if you have it.

Forwarding works to your mailing address — not from it

USPS lets you set up an automatic redirect to your SavvyNomad mailing address, but it will not let you set up an automatic redirect from it. This is a USPS rule that applies to any Commercial Mail Receiving Agency (CMRA), which is what your mailing address is — it isn't specific to SavvyNomad.

If you ever stop using your SavvyNomad mailing address, you'll need to update your address directly with each sender (banks, subscriptions, etc.) rather than relying on a USPS forward. In the meantime, any mail that continues to arrive at your mailing address can be forwarded to you through your SavvyNomad mail forwarding service as usual.

A note for Basic Domicile customers

The Basic Domicile plan does not include a mailing address, and your residential address is not a mail forwarding address. If your auto-forward points to your residential address, we recommend canceling it — or upgrading to a plan that includes a mailing address, then updating your forwarding order using the steps above.
