Can I get a tracking number for a package that was returned to sender?

Written by Bo

No — a package that is returned to sender does not get a tracking number. That is simply not how return to sender works.

When you choose Return to Sender, the package is handed back to the carrier that delivered it. From that point on, the carrier is responsible for returning it to the shipper. No new label is created and no new tracking number is generated, so there is nothing for us to send you and nothing for you to follow.

Why you were given this choice

Packages cannot be accepted at your residential address. When one arrives there anyway, we email you so you can decide what to do with it. You have two options:

  • Accept & Forward — we accept the package, transfer it to our mail facility, upload it to your account, and make it available for forwarding anywhere in the world.

  • Return to Sender — the carrier returns the package to the sender. SavvyNomad does not charge you for this.

Return shipping costs

While SavvyNomad does not charge a fee to return a package, the return shipping itself is not necessarily free. Carriers commonly bill the original sender for the cost of returning a package — and depending on who that sender is and what their policy says, that expense may be passed along to you.

If the package came from a retailer, check their return policy or contact them before assuming the return costs you nothing. This is worth keeping in mind when deciding between returning the package and having it forwarded to you.

How to confirm your package made it back

Because there is no tracking on a returned package, the best way to confirm it arrived is to contact the sender directly — the retailer, seller, or whoever shipped it. They will see the package come back on their end, and they are the ones who can issue a refund or send a replacement.

How to avoid this next time

Have packages sent to your mailing address rather than your residential address. Packages are accepted there as a normal part of your service, they are uploaded to your account, and you can forward them wherever you like.
