Pods Use Cases

Pods are flexible by design.

Some teams keep it simple. Others build full-on financial systems.

There’s no wrong way, just what fits your business.

Start simple, or go all in

The simple setup:

  • Pod for Taxes

  • Pod for Profit

  • Pod for Operating Expenses

Clean. Clear. Easy to maintain.

The full system:

  • Break out Pods by spend category, team, vendor, or even event

  • Add Rules to automate how money flows between them

  • Issue cards to specific Pods so teams can spend directly

Here’s an example of a detailed setup:

In this map:

  • Every purple block is a live Pod

  • Income flows through smart splits into spending categories like Groceries, Bills, and Pizza Nights

  • The system is clear, customizable, and runs itself

Whether you’re managing 3 Pods or 30+, Sequence adapts to you.

Let’s look at some real-world ways to use Pods:

1. Tax Withholding

Pod name: Q3 Tax Reserve
Purpose: Set aside a % of income for quarterly taxes

  • Use a Rule to split income (e.g. 20%) into this Pod automatically

  • Keeps your main balance clean and avoids surprise tax bills

  • You can generate statements from this Pod if your CPA needs them

2. Owner Profit

Pod name: Profit Distribution
Purpose: Set aside profit to pay yourself as a business owner

  • Route a % of revenue or net income into this Pod automatically

  • Keeps your owner's pay separated from operating funds

  • Easily transfer to your personal account when you’re ready to withdraw

Pro tip: Some founders set this to fund weekly or monthly as a regular habit

3. Departmental Budgets

Pod names: Marketing, Ops, Product, Sales
Purpose: Give each team their own spending lane

  • Set monthly transfer Rules for each Pod based on budget

  • Issue team cards connected to their Pod

  • Let managers monitor and control usage without needing bank access

4. Vendor Payments

Pod name: Vendor Flow
Purpose: Separate cash for recurring payments or payables

  • Use a Rule to pull funds from income or a central Pod

  • Schedule payments from here, keeping your operating cash untouched

  • Easy to track total outgoing spend over time

5. Cash Reserves

Pod name: Operating Buffer
Purpose: Keep a rainy day fund on hand

  • Set a Rule to maintain a fixed balance (e.g. $50,000)

  • Sequence will auto-top it off if another Pod has overflow

  • Keeps you protected without lifting a finger

6. Escrow & Client Funds

Pod name: Client: Acme Co.
Purpose: Hold funds for individual clients, projects, or campaigns

  • Assign a unique Pod per client or contract

  • Full separation of funds and reporting

  • Can issue statements or download history as needed

7. Payroll

Pod name: Payroll
Purpose: Holds funds for your next pay run

  • Auto-funded weekly from an Income Source or central Pod

  • Can be linked to a debit card for direct spend

  • Keeps payroll separated so it’s always ready when you are

Pro tip: Set a Rule to maintain a $X balance — auto-refill if it dips

Use Pods your way

You can:

  • Create as many as you need

  • Rename or delete them anytime

  • Adjust Rules without breaking anything

Now that your money’s organized, let’s talk about spending it, right from your Pods.
