You can make voluntary contributions to your KiwiSaver account as often as you like. These contributions are not matched by your employer.

Voluntary contributions are made by sending a payment to Inland Revenue (IRD). Directing your payment through IRD means that:

  • your contribution will go directly to your current KiwiSaver provider, regardless of whether you change providers in the future

  • you can use MyIR to see your contribution history

  • your payment is made securely and will be sent to your provider in 1–2 business days.

How to make a voluntary contribution

  1. Log in to your online banking platform.

  2. Select the 'pay IRD/pay tax' function.

  3. Select the tax type: 'KiwiSaver contributions by member (KSS)'.

  4. Enter your IRD number in the payment details (this will usually be pre-populated).

  5. Confirm the payment to contribute your chosen amount.

  6. Depending on your bank, you should be able to make your contribution recurring when you create your payment.

Make sure your IRD number is correct when you make the payment, this will ensure the contribution is processed correctly and sent to your KiwiSaver account.

Once we’ve received your voluntary contribution, it gets invested according to your KiwiSaver investment plan. You’ll be able to see the transaction(s) in your KiwiSaver account under ‘Recent activity’.

As with other KiwiSaver contributions, you can only withdraw a voluntary contribution when you apply to withdraw your KiwiSaver balance (like for a first home deposit or retirement).
