How to translate handles

How to translate the handles of your store using Translation Lab.

Handles define the unique part of your product, collection, or page URL — for example:

yourstore.com/products/green-tea

With Translation Lab, you can translate handles manually or in bulk using AI to create localized URLs for each language.



1. How to translate handles manually

To translate handles manually:

  • Go to Translations in Translation Lab.

  • Select the section of the resources you’d like to edit (e.g. Products, Collections, Blogs, Pages, or Articles).

  • Under each resource, you’ll see a field called Handle.

  • Enter your translated handle for that resource.


This allows you to fully control how each handle appears in each language — perfect for SEO optimization or when you want specific keywords in localized URLs.


2. Bulk Manual Handle Translation via Import/Export

If you’d like to translate handles manually but in bulk, you can use the Import/Export feature.

This lets you export all resources, update the translated handles directly in the CSV, and import them back into Translation Lab.

3. AI Translate Handles in Bulk (Available on our Paid plans)

Translation Lab also allows you to translate handles automatically with AI Translation.

To enable this:

  • Go to Settings → AI Translation Settings.

  • Enable the option “Translate handles”.


Once you've enabled handle translations, you can navigate to the AI Translation tab and run an AI Translation task just like you would for any other resource type, T-Lab will automatically translate all handles for the selected resources in the respective languages the task has been ran for.


Best Practices

- Always double-check your translated handles for SEO accuracy and readability.

- Make sure your Shopify Markets structure (domains, subfolders, etc.) is properly configured before translating handles

- Test a few URLs after translation to ensure redirects and navigation work correctly

⚠️ Shopify handles all URL redirections automatically when handles are translated. ⚠️

Translation Lab does not control or manage the redirects — they are processed entirely by Shopify’s own system.
