Rotation Time Frames
Overview
All multi time frame studies can display information based on data from equal or higher time frames in the time frame a chart is set to. Multi-time frame indicators have special considerations for settings and the amount of data loaded on a chart.
Rotation studies are not the only multi time frame studies. Multi time frame indicators from Simpler include, Multi 10x, Multi Squeeze Pro, Multi Cross, Big 3, and more. But, since other multi time frame studies are applied to charts a bit differently than Rotation studies, we'll only concern ourselves with the Rotation indicators here. Settings
Any multi time frame indicator can display information on the visible chart representing time frame(s) other than the one the chart is set to.
Due to the nature of how Thinkorswim (TOS) works, there are special considerations for the settings of any multi time frame study.
TOS can only display data representing time frame(s) that are equal to, or greater than, the time frame the visible chart is set to.
For example, the below screenshot is a 10 day 30 minute chart (10D:30m). The Squeeze Rotation study is trying to draw histograms in the lower for time frames 5, 10, 15, 20, 30 and 60 minutes.
Since the Rotation study is attempting to show representative data for time frames lower than the one that the chart is set to, the study cannot display, since there is no data on the chart to interpret those lower time frames.
TOS can only display data to for a time frame that is equal to or higher than the chart's time frame, in this case, 30 minutes.
To fix this, the chart's time frame has been changed to 5 minutes (10D:5m). Since the chart's time frame is now equal to or lower than the lowest time frame the study is attempting to display, the study displays correctly.
Conversely, to display a Rotation study on a 30 minute chart, the time frames in the settings of the study can be changed so that the lowest time frame is 30 minutes, or higher.
For example, in the screenshot below, the Squeeze Rotation and Squeeze Rotation Signals on the 30 minute chart have the time frames in their settings set to 30 minutes and higher.
Historical Data
Time frames in TOS are listed as two numbers, the amount of data loading on the chart and the time frame the chart is set to.
For example, in the below screenshot, the chart is loading 30 days of data on a one minute chart (30D:1m).
The amount of historical data loaded can make a difference depending on the study and the time frames that study is attempting to display a representation of.
If a multi time frame study is trying to draw signals that represent data from a daily time frame on a 1 minutes chart, then it would make sense to load at least a day of data on the one minute chart. Likewise, if the study was looking for data going back 30 days, then load 30 days of data on the chart.
There is no hard and fast rule for the amount of data to load on a chart. More data is usually better. A good rule of thumb is to consider the highest time frame(s) your indicator is using data for, and load at least that amount of data on the chart.
If you notice your platform's performance slowing down, then try loading less data.
