How Do I Factory Reset a Yale Lock?

Doing a factory reset on a lock will reset all its settings, delete all access codes, and return it to its out-of-the-box state. This reset process applies to Yale models YRD256, YRD226, YRD210, and YRD216.

When to Perform a Factory Reset:

Because a full reset will erase all settings and codes, it should not be your first troubleshooting step. That said, here are some scenarios where a full reset may be appropriate course of action:

  • When an access code is not successfully removed after it is re-included into the Z-Wave system

  • When a Z-Wave lock cannot be included into a Z-Wave system and the Z-Wave exclusion was unsuccessful

  • When the lock only shows a red back arrow button in the upper right-hand corner of the lock’s keypad

Factory Resetting Yale Lock:

To factory reset a Yale lock, follow these steps:

  1. Remove the lock’s battery cover

  2. Remove the lock’s batteries

  3. Remove the back plate by removing the two screws in the battery compartment and the screw at the bottom of the lock on the interior side

  4. Press and hold the white reset button next to the cable connector for a minimum of three seconds

  5. While holding the reset button, reinsert the batteries

  6. Once batteries are fully inserted, continue holding the white reset button for an additional 5-10 seconds

  7. Release the reset button

  8. Reinstall the lock to the door

Resetting Default Master PIN:

After the factory reset, the Default Master PIN Code must be changed before any other programming can be completed. To reset the Default Master PIN on a Yale lock, follow these steps:

  1. Place your hand over the lock’s keypad to wake it up (depending on the model of the lock, you may hear Register Master Code. Press the gear/pound key to continue)

  2. Input the Default PIN Code (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8)

  3. Tap the number 1

  4. Tap #

  5. Enter the new PIN Code (must be four to eight digits long)

  6. Tap #

  7. The lock’s keypad should give a visual and audible confirmation

At this point, the Yale lock will need to be included back into the Z-Wave network. Please contact our Support Team anytime using the details below for further assistance.
