How Do I Install the Alloy SmartHome Hub?

(Models may vary from those depicted in video)

The Alloy SmartHome Hub provides your community with a smart home experience that seamlessly connects your residents with their Z-wave enabled devices such as locks, thermostats, plugs, switches, and sensors. Once installed and configured, you’ll be able to remotely control and monitor devices in vacant homes with SmartRent Manager, while residents can monitor and control the devices via the SmartRent app while moved in.

Supported Install Locations

For optimal connectivity and reliable operation, install the hub near an exterior wall close to the ground and near a power source but away from sources of interference such as a running microwave.

  • Do not install the hub near water, such as under a kitchen sink or behind an appliance, such as a refrigerator, dryer, or washing machine.

  • Do not install the hub in an exterior location such as an outdoor utility closet

  • Internet / Media Closet

    • If instructed to install in a separate room, ensure this room is not located too far from the devices you will be pairing and avoid metal media closets, as this can interfere with the connection.

    • Ensure the Media Closet the hub is being installed into is a plastic RF(Radio Frequency) Transparent Enclosure. Metal media boxes are not a supported installation type.

  • If the hub must be installed in a separate room, ensure it is near the devices you will be pairing. Avoid metal media closets, as these can interfere with the connection.

Locating the Serial Number

The serial number is located on the rear of the Alloy SmartHome Hub and under its front cover. Note the serial number, which will be required when registering your Hub in SmartRent Manager.

Removing the Cover

Before installation can begin, you must remove the front cover of the Alloy SmartHome Hub to gain access to the mounting locations.

Using a flat-head screwdriver, gently insert the head into the rectangular slot on the bottom of the hub. Slowly rotate the tool clockwise to dislodge the front cover. This will expose the mounting holes and provide access to the power and ethernet connection points.

Mounting

  1. When the front plate is removed, you will see four spots designed to accommodate the mounting screws.

  2. Place the hub in the desired location and level it. Observe the green level on the hub; it should face the ceiling.

  3. Using a pencil, mark the 4 locations where the mounting screws will be placed.

  4. If fixing a plaster or brick wall, drill pilot holes in the wall using the applicable drill bit and insert the wall plug anchors.

  5. If fixing into drywall, no pilot hole is needed, as that will utilize the included self-drilling drywall anchors. Check for studs behind the location first to ensure no damage to the drywall will occur.

  6. Using either installation method, screw each of the (4) included mounting screws into their respective holes on the hub. DO NOT FULLY TIGHTEN

  7. Route the included power adapter and ethernet cable (if applicable) through the elevated conduit at the bottom of the enclosure and plug them into their respective ports. (

  8. Wrap any excess wire inside the enclosure using the cable two plastic cable wraps (shown).

  9. Observe the green bubble level on the top of the enclosure. Ensure the bubble is in the middle of the level. If it is, you may finish tightening the four mounting screws. Take care not to overtighten.

  10. Return the Alloy SmartHome Hub front cover to the interior enclosure as shown. Ensure the logo faces the correct orientation and the cover is pushed straight onto the enclosure.

  11. You’ll notice “guidance” tabs on the cover and the enclosure. Ensuring those are aligned before applying any force will help mitigate any damage to the hub.

  12. When the hub cover is fully seated, and the hub is securely installed, plug the power adapter into a nearby 110v outlet to power the hub.

  13. Make sure that everything is fully functional before screwing the security screw into the wall socket.

Alloy SmartHome Hub Initial Boot

The Alloy SmartHome Hub operates on a cellular network similar to a cell phone, meaning that the line of sight communication with cell towers directly impacts the strength of the cell signal. If you are experiencing issues with your hub establishing or maintaining a connection, try moving closer to a window or open doorway.

Power Up

Plug the USB-C end of the included power adaptor into the Alloy SmartHome Hub (03). If the cables are fully managed using plastic cable wraps, plug the power brick into a nearby 110v wall outlet.

Connect to the Ethernet

Connect your Alloy SmartHome Hub to your broadband router via Ethernet cable if applicable. The Ethernet port (02) is located behind the front cover of the Alloy SmartHome Hub. Alloy SmartHome Hub queries your DHCP server for an IP address.

Power-up LED Sequence

When you power up the Hub, it usually goes through the following sequence. Note that some steps may be very brief.

  • Slow Blue flash: The Hub is booting (about 30 seconds)

  • 2 Cyan Blinks: The Hub is connecting to a local or cell network

  • 3 White Blinks: The Hub is not connected to a network

  • Continuous Slow Green Blinks: The Hub has a good network connection and is trying to connect to the SmartRent Servers (about 10 seconds)

  • Green - Steady: The Hub is connected to the SmartRent servers

  • Blue & Cyan Cycle: entered AP mode (by holding the button for 5+ seconds) can setup WiFi connection

Should the Hub fail while booting up, the LED may display a steady blue light. If this happens, contact technical support.

If your Hub has trouble connecting to a WiFi network (a 3x white blinking sequence), it may be because your WiFi is not configured yet. You will want to connect it to an Access Point (AP mode). This needs to be done only once, assuming the Hub stays on the same local network. See How to Configure WiFi for detailed instructions. Once connected via WiFi, the LED should flash green and soon become steady green.

Installing the Hub through SmartRent Manager

  1. Select the respective Org > Group > Unit you want to install in.

  2. When on the Unit page, navigate to the hub section.

  3. Manually enter the hub serial number located on the back of the hub.

  4. When the hub serial number appears as an option, select it.

  5. Once selected, the hub will be added to the unit.

Once physically installed, the Hub will need to be assigned to that specific home. For instructions on assigned hubs to homes, refer to our How Do I Assign or Unassign a Hub to a Home in SmartRent Manager Web? or How Do I Assign or Unassign a Hub to a Home in Alloy Install? articles.
