Reject code IND-180-01 occurs when the Primary Taxpayer's Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN) entered on the return does not match the IRS e-File database. This error prevents the tax return from being processed.

The primary taxpayer's Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN) must match the e-File database. Please double-check your entry and resubmit your return with the correct number.

Solution:

This error occurs when the IP PIN entered for the primary taxpayer does not match the number stored in the IRS e-File database. Follow the steps below to resolve this issue.

Steps to Fix:

  1. Verify the IP PIN:

    • Retrieve the correct IP PIN from one of the following:

      • The IRS-issued CP01A notice (mailed annually to taxpayers who receive an IP PIN).

      • Your IRS online account, where you can view the current year's IP PIN.

    • Ensure you are using the IP PIN for the current tax year.

  2. Update the Return:

    • Go to the section in your tax software where the IP PIN is entered.

    • Re-enter the correct IP PIN exactly as provided by the IRS.

  3. Resubmit the Return:

    • Save your updated return and retransmit it.

Additional Notes:

  • IP PIN Overview: The IP PIN is a 6-digit number provided by the IRS to prevent identity theft for taxpayers who are victims or at risk.

  • IRS IP PIN Retrieval: If the IP PIN is lost or misplaced, you can retrieve it by:

    • Logging into your IRS online account.

    • Using the Get an IP PIN tool on the IRS website.

    • Contacting the IRS directly at their Identity Protection line.

Refile the Return:

Once the correct IP PIN is entered, retransmit the return. This should resolve the error.
