Reject code IND-181-01 occurs when:
The Primary Taxpayer did not enter a valid Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN). Please visit www.irs.gov/getanippin for further information and resubmit your return with the correct number.
Solution:
This error occurs because the IP PIN entered is invalid, missing, or incomplete. Follow the steps below to resolve the issue.
Steps to Fix:
Verify the IP PIN:
The IRS issues a 6-digit IP PIN to taxpayers who are at risk of identity theft or are required to use one. Make sure to use the IP PIN for the current tax year.
Check for the IP PIN in one of the following:
CP01A Notice: Mailed annually by the IRS to taxpayers with an IP PIN.
IRS Online Account: Log in to your IRS account to retrieve the correct IP PIN.
Enter the Correct IP PIN:
Go to the section in your tax software for entering the IP PIN.
Input the correct 6-digit number exactly as provided by the IRS.
If You Don’t Have an IP PIN:
If you are required to use an IP PIN but do not have one:
Use the Get an IP PIN tool on the IRS website to retrieve or apply for a new one.
If you are unable to retrieve the IP PIN online, contact the IRS Identity Protection line.
Resubmit the Return:
Save the corrected return and retransmit it.
Additional Notes:
An IP PIN is required for specific taxpayers to prevent fraudulent returns filed using their SSN.
Lost IP PIN: If your IP PIN is lost or misplaced, retrieve it as outlined in Step 3. The IRS cannot share an IP PIN over the phone but will assist you in recovering or applying for one.
Refile the Return:
Once the valid IP PIN is entered, save your changes and resubmit your return. This should resolve the issue.
