Reject code IND-183-01 occurs when:
The Spouse did not enter a valid Identity Protection Personal Identification Number (IP PIN). Please visit www.irs.gov/getanippin for further information and resubmit your return with the correct number.

Solution:

This error occurs when the spouse’s IP PIN is missing, invalid, or incomplete. Follow these steps to fix the issue:

Steps to Fix:

  1. Verify the Spouse's IP PIN:

    • The IRS issues a 6-digit IP PIN for individuals who are at risk of identity theft or are required to use one. Make sure the spouse's IP PIN is:

      • Issued for the current tax year.

      • Entered correctly without any typos.

    • The IP PIN can be found in the following:

      • CP01A Notice: Sent annually by the IRS to individuals assigned an IP PIN.

      • IRS Online Account: The spouse can log in to their IRS account to retrieve the IP PIN.

  2. Retrieve the IP PIN if Missing:

    • If the spouse does not have the IP PIN or cannot locate it:

      • Use the IRS Get an IP PIN tool to retrieve or request the IP PIN.

      • If retrieval online is not possible, contact the IRS Identity Protection line for assistance.

  3. Enter the Correct IP PIN:

    • Go to the section in your tax preparation software where the IP PIN is entered.

    • Input the 6-digit IP PIN for the spouse in the designated field.

  4. Resubmit the Return:

    • After entering the correct IP PIN, save your return and retransmit it.

Additional Notes:

  • An IP PIN is required for taxpayers and their spouses who are assigned one to prevent identity theft and fraudulent filings.

  • Lost or Misplaced IP PIN: The spouse can use the IRS online tool to retrieve it or apply for a new one if necessary.

Refile the Return:

After entering the valid IP PIN, save and refile the return. This should resolve the error.
