How to Apply Other State Credit (FY NJ Resident, Non-Resident of NY)

If you are a New Jersey (NJ) resident who paid state or local taxes to New York (NY), follow these steps to apply for a credit:

Steps to Enter Your Information:

  1. Identify the Amount on NY IT-196, Page 3

    • Click NY 196, Page 3 to locate the tax amount to enter on Line 9a.

  2. Add NJ COJ (NY) Form

    • To apply state or local taxes paid to New York to a New Jersey tax return, add the NJ COJ (NY) form and enter the taxes paid to the other state on Line 9a.

  3. Locate Taxes Paid to New York

    • Find the state and local taxes paid to New York on the taxpayer’s state tax documents. This amount will be used as a credit for taxes paid to another state when preparing the New Jersey state tax return.

  4. Enter the Information in NJ COJ (NY) Form

    • Click NJ COJ (NY).

    • Enter the state or local taxes paid to New York from NY Form IT-196, Page 3 on Line 9a of the NJ COJ (Credit for Taxes Paid to NY) form in the New Jersey state tax return.
