Step 1: Confirm Eligibility for Other State Credit ✅

  1. Verify that the taxpayer is a non-resident of California but has earned income in Nebraska during the tax year.

  2. Confirm that Nebraska taxes were paid and the taxpayer is eligible for the Other State Credit.

Step 2: Access State Tax Section in TaxWise 🖥️

  1. Log in to TaxWise Online – Access your TaxWise account and open the relevant tax return.

  2. Click the + icon to add the form IL CR Pg 1 - IL Other State Income Tax Credit Pg 1 and fill out the necessary amount section.

    • The amount of income earned in Nebraska.

  3. Next, go to form CA 50NR Pg 1 & Pg 2 to check completion. If there's a red highlighted form, review each section to fix any error until it turned green or accomplished.

  4. Next, navigate back to IL CR Pg 1 > Item no. 1 > Non-Illinois portion to enter the correct amount. Scroll down to double check each items.

  5. Next, navigate to IL CR Pg 2 and IL CR Pg 3 to double check the completion of each section.

  6. Then, navigate to form CA 540NR Pg3 and scroll to item no.81 to get the derived value.

  7. Next, return to form IL CR Pg 3 item no. 51 to paste the amount derived amount in item no.81 from CA 540NR Pg3 form.

Step 3: Verify Credit Calculation 🧮

  1. TaxWise will automatically calculate the Other State Credit based on the income and taxes paid to Nebraska.

  2. Ensure the credit amount correctly reflects the taxes paid and the proportion of income earned in Nebraska.
