Understanding Amish and Mennonite Taxpayers

The Amish and Mennonites are religious communities with distinct beliefs, including restrictions on obtaining SSNs. While some Amish groups permit SSNs, others do not. If a taxpayer lacks an SSN, follow these steps:

Filing a Return Without an SSN

  • Enter all zeros in place of an SSN when starting the tax return.

  • For Married Filing Jointly (MFJ), enter the same all-zero SSN for the spouse.

Adding an Amish or Mennonite Dependent

  1. Navigate to Basic Information > Dependents/Qualifying Person from the left-side menu.

  2. Enter the dependent’s details and check "This individual does not have an SSN, ITIN, or ATIN."

  3. When prompted about Form W-7 (Application for ITIN), select NO.

  4. Under "Reason for No SSN," choose Amish or Mennonite accordingly.
