If you discover an error after filing your return, you may need to make corrections. The IRS may adjust certain errors on a return or accept filings without specific required forms or schedules, so in some cases, amending your return may not be necessary. However, if there are changes to your filing status, income, deductions, credits, or tax liability, you should submit an amended return using Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return.
Direct Deposit
If you electronically file Form 1040-X, you can opt for direct deposit to receive your refund more quickly by providing your banking or financial institution details. If you choose to submit a paper version, you will receive a paper check instead. Follow the instructions for completing and submitting the form correctly.
To check the current processing status of an amended return, refer to the processing status dashboard. While processing an amended return remains a manual process, selecting direct deposit for electronically submitted forms allows for faster and more secure refunds.
Balance Due
If you owe additional taxes and the original filing deadline has not yet passed, you can avoid penalties and interest by submitting Form 1040-X or a corrected Form 1040 and paying the owed amount before the deadline. This amended return replaces the original return. If the filing deadline falls on a weekend or legal holiday, it is considered timely if filed on the next business day. If you file after the due date, do not include interest or penalties on Form 1040-X, as they will be adjusted accordingly.
When to File
To claim a refund, you must file Form 1040-X within three years from the date you originally filed your return or within two years from the date you paid the tax, whichever is later. If you filed your return before the due date, it is considered filed on the deadline. Withholding tax is also deemed paid on the due date. If you had an extension to file and submitted your return before the extended deadline, it is treated as filed on the actual date received by the IRS. Special rules apply to refund claims related to net operating losses, foreign tax credits, bad debts, and other tax matters. More details can be found in the Instructions for Form 1040-X.

Checking Your Amended Return Status
You can check the status of your amended return through the "Where’s My Amended Return?" online tool or by calling the IRS at 866-464-2050. These tools are available in both English and Spanish and provide tracking for the current tax year and up to three prior years. Generally, processing takes 8 to 12 weeks, though it may take up to 16 weeks in some cases. The IRS processing status dashboard provides updated timeframes for reference.
State Tax Returns
A change to your federal tax return may also impact your state tax liability. To correct your state tax return, reach out to your respective state tax agency for further instructions.
